Are these soft and long strands of hay ? What does easy flake hay mean ? Also is it first or second cut orchard hay ?

Answer by ClaudetteSep 23, 2025
I LOVE Chewy! But I ordered a box of the orchard grass hay and was disappointed. I was hoping for soft hay, but this hay was stemmy. I have a 30+ year old and a 40+ mini horse and donkey, and they need soft hay. I gave it to our neighbor's cow, and she loved it. I was so hopeful this would be the answer to my hay search. It was very nicely delivered. Thank you, Chewy, for all you do for our animals. . ,

Is this OK for guinea pigs to eat?

Answer by ChewyAug 04, 2025
It is safe for small animals, including Guinea pigs.

If this is in a covered indoor shelter area, how long will it stay fresh?

Answer by ChewyOct 06, 2025
Proper storage can extend shelf life to a year or more. Store forages in covered, cool, well-ventilated conditions away from the effects of weather.

This Orchard grass hay is a hay that none of our four mules had ever had the pleasure of sampling. They each one chose it over any number of bales that they had access to. The Hay itself is textured in such a way that it was easily “mouth filling“ yet appeared to be enjoyed by each mule in a smaller bite portion, as if they might be saying, “I believe I will ‘savour – this – great taste” way. It has a rich green appearance and I know low sugar content, as that is so important to one of my insulin resistant mules and therefore very important to me. it is a quality product that is impressionable to both me and my Mules. Wish I had a barn full of it.

Very nice, soft, green hay. This can be used for any animal including livestock and small pets like bunnies and piggies. I can see this being especially nice for indoor pets as the sturdy box contains any mess and it would last a long time. I have horses and all three liked this hay and left absolutely no waste when eating it. As far as cost, it may not be worth it for large livestock, but it is a more affordable option for small pets when compared to other products.

First of all when I first ordered this I thought it was pellets however to my surprise it’s a full compact bale! This hay is so green, soft, rich. I basically give this as a treat to my horses because they don’t usually get this rich of hay. But if this is something you feed or need for a dietary restriction I think the price is reasonable and the packaging is actually very useful. The flakes are pre-cut and the box keep it’s all fairly clean.

Wow!!!

Wasn't expecting such a huge box, but I guess 50# of hay would be a lot. Guinea Pigs seem to be enjoying it. Like the variety it gives them.

The prettiest hay

I’m from the Midwest and have had horses most of my life, so I’ve seen a lot of hay — and this hay is pretty. It’s green, soft, smells great, and mine wasn’t dusty at all. It definitely passed the horse’s seal of approval! This is orchardgrass hay, which has a nice balance of nutrition — typically around 10–12% protein, moderate calories, and a good mix of fiber and calcium. It’s richer and leafier than plain timothy or prairie grass but not as heavy or calcium-rich as alfalfa, which makes it a great “middle ground” hay. If your horse is older or not an easy keeper (but doesn’t have other health issues), this would be a choice worth taking a look at. If your horse is a pasture pet, has laminitis, metabolic concerns, or needs very low-sugar hay, you might want to check with your vet before switching — orchardgrass can sometimes run a bit higher in non-structural carbohydrates depending on the cutting. The only thing that would give me pause is that I couldn’t find any information about which cutting this is. To be fair, that’s understandable — labeling every box by cutting would be impractical — but when you buy hay, that’s something most horse owners like to know. This particular vendor offers a number of different types of hay, so if orchardgrass doesn’t fit your horse’s needs, there are other good options to choose from. The box was well-packed and very compressed, which makes it easy to handle and store — especially nice if you don’t want to wrestle full-size bales. The outside of the box had a little FedEx grime (they can’t seem to deliver anything that doesn’t look like it’s been on a cargo ship for a week), but the hay inside was perfectly clean and fresh. The price is reasonable for what it is — especially if you’re in an area where hay prices are sky-high. You could certainly use this for more than just horses; it would work well for goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, or other small livestock. My horses acted like they’d been seated at a fine dining restaurant. Overall, I’m impressed. I didn't know what to expect from boxed hay. Its a different way to buy hay. But it’s quality orchardgrass hay at a fair price, shipped well, and clearly processed with care.

I have been struggling to get consistent soft orchard hay for my older mare with dental issues. I have been buying hay from 5 different feed stores and none can keep good hay in. This was a new option for me and I have only purchased one box so far with the second on order. The hay was all consistently soft and had a variety of lengths. I do notice a LOT of small brown half inch pieces in it that float to the floor in large qty when the flake is separated and it is very dusty. I have to wear a mask as clouds of dust come off the hay. I separate it all and weigh and bag it before I feed, so for anyone that just drops a flake, they wouldn't experience this level of dust and the qty of small bits that fall out. It is written in the details as "dust free" and that is not the case but I am ordering another box to see if this one was just unusually dusty. I am happy overall with the softness of the hay and it smells nice. I am hopeful the next box is less dusty as I would love to finally have a consistent quality hay..

Quality varies

Sometimes it's fine and green, sometimes it's thick and yellow, quality varies from one box to another.
