Why is the hay chopped into small pieces and yellow?

Answer by ChewyOct 27, 2025
The hay is sun-cured without using any spray, chemicals, or preservatives, and can fade in color due to direct sunlight. Some pieces end up getting chopped small in the packing machine.

Good quality chopped hay

The hay came well packaged and I liked that it was resealable! The hay itself had a good color and smell to it. My only complaint (and this is personal preference) was that the pieces were very short - too chopped up for my taste and for how I feed my bunnies (in baskets and nets) this hay would be perfect for someone who used a bowl or something that the hay could just be piled up. This is one of the reasons I gave it a 4 instead of 5 star. I prefer hay in different lengths and textures - the bunnies actually "forage" through the hay that I have to find the pieces that they like - which I like for them. The bunnies were hesitant at first and simply nibbled on it. By time I came home from work it was all gone...and that's what matters!

Got for my mini rex. Packaging is nice, the smell is amazing, and it looks very fresh and green. Unfortunately cannoli still prefers his regular timothy hay. He could tell I was adding something new to his hay rack because he’s very in my business, but after adding a bunch he continued looking around waiting for the fun new thing to appear. This is a not a great vote from him as he is super food motivated. Gave a small bunch to my young english lop mix and she seems to like it better but is primarily still on alfalfa so it will likely end up being a treat for her. My main complaint is that all the pieces are very short and small so it is not good for teeth health.

Great Hay for small creatures

My rabbits, guinea pig, and even my possum absolutely love this hay—and the chickens enjoy scratching up the little bits too! The moment I open the bag, all my pets

My rabbits, guinea pig, and even my possum absolutely love this hay—and the chickens enjoy scratching up the little bits too! The moment I open the bag, all my pets come running like it’s candy for kids. It’s fresh, fragrant, and they happily munch it down. I’ve noticed they seem calmer and more content since eating it, which tells me it’s supporting their well-being just like the description says. I also appreciate that it’s 100% organic and free from GMOs, pesticides, and additives. The bag didn’t last long in my house—I’ll definitely be ordering more!

We tried this hay as a treat from the regular hay we give our guinea pigs. Our girls are 6+ and were doing zoomies and purring with excitement when we gave them the new hay. They loved it and sat in the hay bin till it was almost gone. It’s a keeper for sure!

I love the texture and smell of this hay. It's short, finely textured strands of hay and very fragrant. It smells like being in a field of flowers with a hint of something slightly sweet. The bag is densely packed so you're getting more than it would seem when you first pick it up.It was easy to pull out a handful without pulling everything out of the bag though which made for much less mess. My rabbits are a little picky so I put it side by side with my usual hay and they've been picking at it along with their current hay. As a bonus my house pigeons don't think it's good for nest building so they haven't been raiding the rabbits hay rack as much and it's lasting much longer than my usual hay and less mess on my floors.

My guinea pigs went nuts for this hay.

When I say that my guinea pigs love this they literally attacked the bag every time I went to refill their hay feeder. They absolutely loved this hay and I will

Good sized bag of fresh hay for guinea pigs

I got this bag of hay for my two guinea pigs and they really enjoyed it. The hay smelled really good and fresh, it was finely chopped and easy to feed, the bag size lasts awhile for two guinea pigs. Easy to store and keep fresh for feeding to them everyday. We have hay we buy for our goats that I sometimes give to my guinea pigs but they enjoyed this type of hay alot more. Would highly recommend if you have small animals that eat hay.

Smells fresh

When I opened the box I was surprised how large the bag of hay was! It smelled fresh and was a big hit with our little lady. I also liked that it wasn’t too stuck

The guinea pigs loved it at first, eating it before the timothy hay. However, now it seems to be old news, and the timothy is top dog now.
