CC Pet Sporty Hermit Crab Shells, 2 count

I’m disappointed to see painted hermit crab shells being sold on Chewy. Painted shells are widely known to be harmful for hermit crabs (the paint can be ingested or trap moisture and bacteria). Beyond the health risks, hermit crabs have very specific needs and providing them with safe, natural shells is an essential part of responsible care. Please reconsider offering painted shells and instead promote options that support hermit crab health and well-being. Lead by example and set a higher standard for humane, responsible pet products!

Painted shells are toxic to hermit crabs, do a little research before spending money on the shells offered by big box vendors.

I have contacted Chewy, and yet they continue to stand by this horrible product. Painted crab shells ONLY exist to be visually appealing. They do absolutely nothing to further protect a crab than a plain shell. Thing is, the paint on these shells comes off, sometimes flaking off straight out of the bag. This leaves paint flakes inside your crabs' cage and water dishes. FURTHER, crabs are known to munch on shells when they are looking for calcium and nutrients--even shells that other crabs are wearing! So it doesn't matter what way the shell is being used in the tank; your crabs will end up munching on paint regardless. Chewy's reasoning for supporting this product is because it's not FATAL...A lot of damage can happen from ingesting poison without necessarily dying. Chewy has chosen a product that will sell because of appearance over the safety of living beings, and that is NOT ok. Will be looking for a new pet food supplier. Goodbye, Chewy.
