Can this be used to take a urine sample to the vet?

Answer by ChewyMay 29, 2025
You can keep the sample if necessary. Simply close the vial with the cap and keep it in the refrigerator. If the test shows any positive result, take the sample to your vet for further testing.

Sometimes our cat Felix, who has everything from FLUTD to Diabetes, can give the vet a very hard time and they are not always able to get a urine sample from him. They will give me a little bag of non absorbent litter but unfortunately he is a big boy and he likes A LOT of LITTER so he can kick it all over! These are still kind of small bags but so far the best value around and it works like a charm. I am able to successfully get a urine sample every time as long as we put enough in there! It also helps us save a few bucks at the vet so THANK YOU! Highly recommend...the vet usually gives me a sample cup and dropper and its always good to have back up as this comes with one as well!

Our vet told us about this product. Just put this special sand in a small clean litter box the day before an appointment, and collect the urine easily with the included dropper and test tube. The vet can send it out for testing with no stress to the cat. We also kept test strips at home to monitor for issues. Very helpful to stay on top of bladder and kidney issues for older cats, or for any cat since they hide their pain.

It did not work the first time. As by the time I saw my cat had urinated, my cat had also tried to bury it, and it just fell apart and mixed in with the sand. The other thing was that when it mixed in with the sand it's stuck with the sand to the bottom of the litter box. I got it to finally work by putting a plastic liner in the litter box, then I put the litter in, and was able to get to the litter box to see he had done something within 20 minutes. I think if I had been a little later it again would have mixed in with the sand. So it works when it works if your cat feels comfortable with you stalking him at his litter box, and with using a liner to set it up.

I bought this to collect and test a urine sample and it worked as advertised. I shared the results with my vet and it was helpful info.

Unfortunately that doesn't really matter as your Veterinarian wont accept it and will perform Cystocentesis anyway, because the procedure provides a more sterile and uncontaminated sample. The product does work...just remember the results aren't always accurate particularly Nitrites, Leukocytes and urine specific gravity.

This kit contains 2 lbs of sand, which is just enough to cover the bottom of his smaller litter box. He was curious about it, sniffed and scratched at it a couple of times, but ultimately used his other box. I don't know if he'd use it if there was more of it or not, but he definitely would not be able to do the usual "I peed and now I need to cover it up". It also has a very strange feel to it (hydrophobic) and maybe he felt that on his paws. Or maybe that was just my human reaction. Either way, he didn't use it. I am going to buy another kit and try again, in hopes that he won't find it as strange this time - I'll update my review if he uses it. Fingers crossed!
