Keeps the cats from spilling the water. I love the lavender color. It does not skid. Lost a star because metal bowls are thin and easily dent and by that I mean you can put a dent in the bottom just by tapping it to hard. The bowls can be easily replaced though with sturdier metal bowls if needed.
