Does this require a Co2 canister set up or can one use an aquarium air pump ?

Answer by ChewyJul 28, 2025
The CO2 Flipper is recommended exclusively for the diffusion of CO2 only. So a CO2 System is definitely required. The Flipper operates very slowly so that the CO2 can diffuse very efficiently into the aquarium water. It is not suitable and efficient with an air pump.

This was a replacement for an old Hagen model. Much better design with a solid tube feeding the CO2 to the bottom of the later - used to be an air-line. The flipper is also a nice addition. If there is anything left of a CO2 bubble that did not disolve completely, it has another chance rather than just leaving the ladder. Side mount is easier than a back mount. Working well.

The Ultimate CO2 Diffuser

My pollen glass diffuser created major amounts of condensation inside my aquarium hood (wasting CO2 gas). My brother, visiting from Europe, gave me this Dennerle CO2 diffuser. It is absolutely awesome! Not only is there zero condensation, you can literally watch the CO2 dissolve into the water: you can see the bubbles shrink in size to almost zero by the time they hit the flipper at the top. Besides, it is cool to watch them zig-zag the ramps and it has a built in bubble counter: count the bubbles as they come out of the dispenser. Best gift ever I received for my aquarium.
