DILT-XR works on the heart by changing how calcium is used to treat heart rhythm problems in dogs and cats, and for some forms of feline heart disease. Approved by the FDA for use in humans, DILT-XR is prescribed by veterinarians for use with companion animals. Contains individual tablets inside of each capsule for more accurate and individualized dosing. For once a day dosage, this product is a generic for Dilacor XR.

 Uses

Diltiazem Hydrochloride Extended-Release Capsules are indicated for the treatment of hypertension and for the management of chronic stable angina.

Possible Side Effects

At usual doses, bradycardia is the most prominent side effect reported in dogs. In cats, vomiting is reportedly the most common side effect. Potentially, lethargy, GI distress (anorexia), hypotension, heart block and other rhythm disturbances, CNS effects, rashes, and elevations in liver function tests could occur in any species.

Drug & Food Interactions

Diltiazem should not be used in animals that have: had an allergic reaction to it; have low blood pressure; have certain types of heart rhythm problems (eg, AV block, slow heartrate). Diltiazem should be used with caution in animals that have: severe liver or kidney problems, as the drug is metabolized by the liver and eliminated from the body by the kidneys; severe heart failure. If your animal has any of these conditions, talk to your veterinarian about the potential risks versus benefits.

How long until I will know if Diltiazem is working, and how long will the effects of this medication last?

This medication should start having effects within 1 to 2 hours; however, you will not see the effects of this medication outwardly. Your veterinarian will need to run further tests to determine if the medication is working appropriately. The effects of this medication are short-lived, meaning they will stop working within 24 hours, although the benefits may be prolonged if your animal has decreased kidney and/or liver function.

Can handling Diltiazem be hazardous to me, my family, or other animals?

There are no specific precautions required when handling this medication unless you are allergic to it. Wash your hands after handling any medication.

    Great med, controls my pet's blood pressure as prescribed. easy to adjust the dose with the tablets inside the capsule.
