How long is the cord? And can you use an extension cord with it?

Answer by ChewyJan 13, 2025
This unit has a 5ft cord and is not recommended to use an extension cord but if one MUST be used, we recommend a heavy-duty outdoor cord and as short as possible.

Will this work in a 25 gallon, plastic bucket?

Answer by ChewyDec 10, 2025
While this de-icer is safe to use in Plastic, and Metal tank applications and all pond designs - liners, and pre-formed plastic, the 1250 Watts of Power may be too strong for anything under 100 gallons.

Does it have a thermostat?

Answer by ChewyJul 08, 2024
This de-icer is thermostatically controlled to operate only when necessary.

Put this de-icer in my husband’s ice bath (plastic cattle stock tank) and it’s been doing a great job of keeping it ice free, but still cold! (For reference, we live in NH and normally he’d spend a long time every morning breaking up all the ice with a hammer.) we’ve had it for about two weeks, and it works great so far.

I tried a different type of de-icer but I came back to this one. It's simple and works great even if it only last a few seasons. The only thing I would change is have a longer cord since it has to be able to float down in the large troughs.

Fair price

Just what I needed for the best price I could find. Shipping was slower, but I had given it plenty of time. Great for rubber/plastic tanks.

I have big plastic water tanks for my horses. They advised to only use the caged variety of heaters, or use the ones that plug into the hole at the bottom. The cage is sold separately from the heater if that's the one you want, more expensive. The ones that install at the bottom can sometimes leak and I've had them fail. This cast aluminum heater worked great in my tank last winter. I would recommend it!

Keeps our large trough water available

Don’t use an extension cord! They warn you not to, husband did not listen! This is a lifesaver as our large dog prefers to drink outside, even in the cold winter
