FAQ
Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.
Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:
- Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
- Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
- Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.
Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Adding a prescription to our monthly order for cat food and litter has really tripped up the people at Chewy. Maybe it's because the prescription is handled and shipped out of a difficult facility. I don't know. Either way, it's been nothing but a pain to get our cat's medicine. Our first few orders with Chewy were for a one month's supply (30 ml) of medicine. That was a pain because we had to go to our vet each month to get a physical copy of each script to mail to Chewy (no scanning or emailing allowed - regular USPS snail mail). Thinking it would make life easier for us, we had our vet prescribe a 3 month supply of meds (90 ml) with one refill (should be good for 6 months, right?). Chewy sent us 30 ml the first month, 90 ml the next month, and now says we have 60 ml left on this script but still need to mail in a physical copy of the prescription WHICH WE NO LONGER HAVE BECAUSE WE MAILED IT IN AS REQUIRED WITH THE INITIAL REQUEST FOR A 3 MONTH SUPPLY. It's all such a mess and, quite frankly, not worth it. It will be easier to make the 1 hr long drive to the pet pharmacy we were using prior to giving Chewy a try. Very disappointing.
It’s definitely helping!

My older shih tzu mix (13 years old) is struggling with anxiety and some dementia. It’s been heartbreaking to see her suffer and I have been desperate to ease her mind, especially her panic and confusion at night. She’s an expert at spotting and spitting out pills, so I’m very grateful that a liquid is available. We are on week three of the medication and she’s definitely doing a little bit better. I see a little improvement daily. It’s not a cure, but for sure helpful.
Night and day difference

We adopted our kitten in March and while she was the sweetest thing, she was terrified of every noise and movement. This med has made her a completely different cat. She is now happier, snugglier, and so much less afraid. We couldn’t be happier that she is able to live her best life. We started with the tuna flavor and she takes it without any issues. We mix her dose with warm water and seafood flavor wet food.
Fought me to get away from it.
My cat HATED this prescription, and I tried putting it in wet food, a treat, and straight from the source. She started avoiding me and fighting me, so I don't think

This was my first (compounded) pharmacy order for my cat. I called just to make sure what I needed to do. I forget who I spoke to, but she was very helpful and explained exactly what needed to be done. I received my order in a few days. Not only was it easy to order, but the price was much better than where I was getting it locally!
Sadly, she hates it.

I thought tuna might help the medicine taste ok? My cat RUNS from me when I come to her, even without the syringe, since we started the meds. BUT...after just a few times, she HAS stopped peeing out of box, so I guess it worked...luckily for a short time. I am holding my breath and hoping she does not continue. (She was treated for crystals and is on Urinary food, several ultrasounds show no crystals, blood tests are perfect.. )
seems to work, and the delivery system doesn't leak (knock wood!)

My cat takes this for idiopathic cystitis and it seems to be working fine. Price is good, and the delivery system hasn't leaked - a blessing because this stuff is oily! The syringes could be better, but overall I'm pleased. Just have to remember whenever you start a new batch of any med, start with a small dose and work up. They can taste the difference and get suspicious!

This is a thicker oily compound compared to the very liquid oil compound I get from my vets online pharmacy. He hates it and tbh won’t take the meds now. So I need to order again from the regular vet, I was surprised to see such a difference and was hoping he would’ve enjoyed it. Cats are picky what can ya do.

I really like this medicine and it lasts my cat a long time! My one complaint is that after some time, the medicine does leak a little when I pull it out of the bottle so the bottle and label get sticky and covered in the meds. but otherwise I love it and my picky cat doesn't even notice it is in her food!
