Too Dusty For Rats

Wayyy too dusty for rats. My ratties have been sneezing excessively and exhibiting a whistle while breathing since switching to this brand bedding. Handling this product even makes me sneeze. Additionally, it has an odd odor to it that I can't accurately describe... it reminds me of a hospital scent. Their sensitive respiratory systems just can't handle this bedding. I've used other Aspen wood bedding brands and never had this problem. Aspen wood shavings are recommended by their veterinarian. Aspen is known to be a good substrate and bedding for rats, I just don't know what's up with this brand in particular. I switched it out for some paper bedding I had on hand, and their symptoms ceased overnight. I still gave it a few stars because it may be a good option for other small pets, and it is a great value for its size. Unfortunately, the cons heavily outweigh the pros for me and my pets in particular. I thank the Chewy team for helping me out with this matter.

Gerbils Approved

Been using this bedding + Kaytee Clean & Cozy Small Animal Bedding for 2 years. This mixture (1 part paper, 3 parts aspen) holds up the gerbils' tunnel system very well. Never seen it collapse once. It's always been dusty when I take it out of the bag though, which is to be expected since it's shredded wood, so always wear a mask when pouring it out, and let it sit for a while before putting your pets back in.

Works Great for Snakes

This is a HUGE package of bedding - 141L is a package size just under 3'x2' so make sure you have storage space! I use it for my adult Western Hognose snake and she loves to dig through it and create tunnels that hold up pretty well. It's soft and fluffy, without any scent other than a light "woody" scent when you're stirring it up. It absorbs her messes and makes it easy to spot clean and will last me through quite a few bedding changes.

Dusty Mess

While I like that I can get Aspen which is much better for small pets then Cedar or pine, I hate how dusty this particular product is. The shavings are also huge and occasionally include large chunks. This brand seems to get scattered across the floor even worse than others.

Long Lasting

We try and clean our daughter's hamster cage at least once a week because of the odor, but sometimes it just doesn't happen and every brand I have tried does not hold the odor. This is the first time I tried Frisco brand and it really help with the odor - the smell was fresh wood chips not stinky animals. Our hamsters love making new sleeping spots every time we put in new bedding and this bedding seems to hold up nicely - we are able to find the hamsters without digging through the bedding.

Mouse approved

Works great with 2 female mice in a tank. Odor control is good overall and lasts about a week between total cleanouts. Chips are lightweight, so they get tracked easily. Recommend doing changes and cleanups outdoors if possible, or over a large trashcan. We recycle the used bedding as mulch and fertilizer.

Way too dusty

If it's making me sneeze when I'm taking it out of the bag then it is completely unacceptable for small pets. Also has a harsh smell to it. Trust me the price isn't worth it, at least not for small pets.

Not suitable for hamsters

I bought this brand because they stopped carrying the Living World brand I used for my dwarf hamster. This is not suitable for hamsters; it is big wood chips. It would be fine for rabbits or guinea pigs, but it is too sharp and chunky to be hamster bedding. I will give it to my local animal shelter that has rabbits.

Horrible Product

I'm used to using Kaytee Aspen bedding, which is fantastic and financially prudent. They're out of stock, though, so I bought this mistake. Does not absorb well--stinks terribly. Overpriced. But, I already bought it and will use it (more frequently because of its poor performance) until Kaytee is restocked.
