I had high hopes for this brightly colored, well constructed, plush carrot dental chew cat toy, especially since it contains both silvervine and cat mint. It is marketed as supporting dental health, something that is so important for cats. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite land with my crew. Despite the enticing ingredients, my cats only gave it a brief curious sniff and walked away. I tried reintroducing it at different times of the day, hoping their interest would kick in, but the response stayed the same. No chewing, batting, or playful engagement beyond the initial sniff test. It is very possible that the timing worked against this toy - the cats received several new toys for Christmas and are extremely loved (read spoiled) by their pawrents and many devoted aunties. Competition was stiff this month. Still, given the ingredients and purpose, I expected more enthusiasm from my cats whose ages range from two years old to eight years old. While I appreciate the concept and the focus on feline dental health, this toy wasn’t a hit in our household. It may work better for cats who are especially responsive to silvervine or cat mint, but for us, it didn’t spark much interest.

My cats took to the toy carrot right away. They were having fun rolling around with it, biting it, and tossing it in the air. My cats were playing with it in the kitchen and around in the living room. The toy carrot looks very durable because it is holden up fine when my cats play with in. I like the carrot toy and would recommend it to my friends for their cats to play with.

One Tough Carrot

When I first introduced the carrot to the cats, it was a big hit. The ones that respond to catnip really liked smearing their faces on it and kickboxing it. After about a day, though, either the scent wore off or they just got used to it. They don’t play with it nearly as much now, but I think it’s still a great toy to bring out for them occasionally. It’s a perfect size, has a little crinkle noise to it, and the mesh is easy and fun for them to grab with their claws and toss around. The stitching seems very secure and tight, so I expect it'll last a long time. I haven’t noticed any of my cats trying to chew on it yet, but if they do I think it’ll hold up very well. I was hoping the mesh would help floss their teeth a little, but so far, they just want to lick it or bat it around. My group of cats (and probably all cats) get bored with the same toys, so I have a box of goodies that I rotate through to keep them entertained. I’ll definitely keep the carrot in the rotation, and they’ll enjoy playing with it from time to time.

Binx and Baby Girl both like this toy

As soon as I unpacked this toy and put it on the floor, my 14 year old ginger boy Binx started to roll around with it and play with the toy, batting it around. His orange tabby sister Baby Girl is a bit shy and she took a while to warm up to it but seems to enjoy it. Binx is more a catnip cat than she is so he's more intrigued by the smell. Like all toys of its size, it eventually winds up under the couch or the entertainment center or buffet, but once I pull it out again the fun resumes.

The dental chew cat toy, in itself, is well crafted. If you're worried about cats chewing through it and leaving trails of catnip all over the house, I don't think that would happen with this toy. It just wasn't a hit in my house with either the kitten or the 8 yo cat, although I had higher hopes with the kitten. He DID immediately grab it and wrestled with it steadily for about 45 minutes . . . and then left it in a corner and hasn't been interested in it again. I've tried tossing it to him, but it just lands with a thud and sits there. I think the idea of this is good, but with my kitten, shaped into a ball that rolls would probably have worked better. Summary is: good quality, a bit clunky, and not a hit at my house.

Our cats enjoyed this toy! They seemed to like the texture and both were seen rubbing their faces all over it. This carrot toy also did seem to entice them to chew for a bit but like most toys the cats lost interest after a few plays. It is a good quality toy and is different in texture than most toys you will find. I took off a star because the cats seemed to lose interest in it fairly quickly

One of my two cats really needs dental chews, but neither seems to be able to figure this dental chew toy out. They know something smells good but don't seem interested in biting into it, which is how it would clean their teeth. The idea is that as a cat bites into it, the exterior netting would scrape teeth clean, but mine don't bite into it. They both sniff it and bat it around a bit, but that's all. After a few days, they seem to have lost interest.

Pretty sturdy (so far), makes an enticing rustling sound. Doesn’t seem to have much scent, I suppose this isn’t a “classic” catnip toy. The crew like it for a bit but I had just put out new Yeowww! bananas so they were a bit distracted. We have one cat that cleans his teeth on every cardboard box in the house, but I am looking to the other three to give this a real workout.

My cat went nuts for this dental chew cat toy - I don't know if it was the crinkly sound, the texture of the mesh, or the catmint that did it but he won't stop playing with it. I keep finding it in different parts of the house. I'll have to see if it helps keep his teeth clean, but it's definitely keeping him stimulated.
