How do you keep dogs from pulling the pee pads out of the dog litter box

Answer by ChewyOct 07, 2025
Training & Supervision: Reward the dog for keeping the pad in place (positive reinforcement). Supervise early on, and if the dog starts to paw or pull, gently interrupt and redirect them. Pad with adhesive on the bottom to help keep it in place. Pad that fits exactly so no edges that the dog can pull/ play with.

Indoor "plumbing"

Our last dog suffered through my insistance that she potty outside regardless of the weather or time of night. Fast forward 12 years or so, and I am no longer willing and able to sprint out the back door in foul weather. Enter the Frisco Dog Potty. I am now training my puppy to do her business outside like a real dog, OR, when it's more convenient for ME, inside like kitty. I've noticed that sometimes my puppy will pee on the edge of the puppy pad and when I go to change it out with a fresh one, I'll discover a little puddle underneath. If I was just using pads alone, that would mean a mess on the floor. But with the Frisco Dog Potty, the mess is contained and very easy to clean up. My old dog was such a good girl and really hated having to do her business in the pounding rain or under the picnic table in the snow. Of course, it was no fun for me either. I look back on those days and regret that I never considered an indoor box for her to use.

Living in a state with lots of rain, lightening, and seasonal hurricanes, make it challenging some days to get our small mini dachshund out to potty safely. This potty box works great with puppy pads and is easy for her to identify as her safe place to potty. The box keeps the floors clean and dry, and since it fits the shape of puppy pads pretty well, the box walls keep our puppy on the pad when she potties. Great solution!

I have 2 year old mini dachshund who is potty trained indoors. Originally we had a different low entrance dog litter tray but due to my doxie's long body, he would leave the back half of his body (the most important part) out of the tray. I had a temporary solution of pushing a boot tray covered in pee pads infant of the litter trays entrance but I got tired of buying pee pads. This new tray allows my doxie to fully enter the tray, turn around, and exit once he's done. It's easy to disinfect, sanitize, and clean! It doesn't take up too much space either.

Didn’t work for my yorkie.

I love the idea of the tray but she refused to use it even with coaxing of treats. I tried for a few days with no success.

Seemed like it would be great for indoor potty but way too slick, it slides and the pads inside slide around and also my small dog puppy will not use it but will use a flat puppy pad holder with pad. Very overpriced for something my puppy won't use!

Love the concept

Overall, it is a decent-sized tray, ideal for a full-sized miniature Dachshund or Yorkie. The front lip, where an animal would need to step in, is about 3.5 inches tall. An older blind small dog using pee pads might struggle to step into it, and a very small puppy might find it challenging as well. The inside of the container measures 21 1/8 inches in length, 21 3/4 inches in width, and 9 inches in height. The measurement on the sticker includes the ridges. Due to its durability, I would only recommend it for small dogs and small to medium puppies. One of my biggest complaints with pee pads is that they can move around, or a dog might pee next to them instead of on them. Training a dog to use a tray like this can address both issues.

Might be perfect for some

This potty tray might be perfect for puppies or maybe small dogs in apartments. It is a heavy gray plastic tray with a low entrance. It is a good size for puppies or medium sized dogs. I was hoping it would work out for my senior dog who has trouble making it outside. But so far my dog has not got the hang of it. Nonetheless, I think it might be helpful for older dogs that have trouble walking. Note it does NOT come with liners or pads. You are meant to buy the liners separately and place them on the bottom of the plastic tray. The tray is easy to clean.

I really like this product because it keeps all of the pee and poop contained! You ever those issues when house training puppies and they always seem to miss the pad? With this, they have to go in and it’s relatively easy to get them used to it. My tiny fella picked up within the day. It’s not very heavy either, decent plastic. I think it could be a bit more durable but overall I’m pleased with it.

This is a wonderful product for one new puppy. It’s neat and easy to clean. I only gave it 3 stars because no matter what I did I couldn’t get my dogs to pee in it. First off, I have 4 chihuahuas ranging from 3 to 13. They’re very set in their ways. They’ll pee outside when it’s not below freezing or in the crate we’ve had for 13 years. They don’t like new places to pee and they’re very set in their ways. Second is that I use the top of their crate to place potty pads and mats. Finally I would highly recommend this product for a family with only one dog, even a Chi. Four is just too much to ask for, especially with their ages.
