The size is just right. Would have preferred if it was attached to a pole that I could place in the ground, but it has a hook I can hang on a shepherd's pole. The hole opening is 1.2 inches, which is big enough for bluebirds and most birds. Will see if birds like it, come spring. I like the opening in back for cleaning, and I like the distressed look that blends in with my yard.
