Freeze-Dried, Solution-Based Feeding

Solution-based feeding is the focus for all Grandma Lucy’s recipes. Each nutritious freeze-dried formula is made using only wholesome, minimally processed ingredients.

Ingredients with a Purpose

It takes high-quality ingredients to produce high-quality food. That’s why Grandma Lucy’s uses only the highest quality ingredients from trusted suppliers and farms. Pureformance recipes are perfect for all breeds and life stages—feed them as a main meal, topper or as an addition to any homemade treat!

Family Values

Grandma Lucy’s is a company that cares. They care about pets, they care about nutrition, and they care about ingredients. They also care about giving, and they care about getting it all done right.

How Freeze-Drying Works

The freeze-drying process used by Grandma Lucy’s removes 92% of the water in the ingredients, leaving a food that is lightweight, compact, shelf-stable and preservative-free. Compared to other drying processes like dehydration or air drying, freeze-drying is better at retaining the characteristics of raw food. It preserves more flavor and keeps much of the food’s original texture after reconstitution.

About Grandma Lucy’s

Grandma Lucy’s began when founders Breann & Eric Shook started their quest for safe, healthy dog treats. Their 11-year old English Cocker Spaniel, Lucy, had developed food allergies that prevented her from eating most treats, and as they learned what was in pet food, they were surprised at the inferior ingredient quality. After consulting with vets and nutritionists, they started home cooking Lucy’s meals and treats, and what resulted was the basis for the healthy pet foods they make today.

Questions & Answers

How many cups of food does the 10 pound bag make? One reply says 184 and one says 92. I have a 92 pound Goldendoodle and he will eat around 2 1/2 - 3 cups a day.
Answer by ChewyJun 20, 2019
The 1 pound bag makes up to 5 pounds of fresh food (approximately 20 cups), the 3 pound bag makes 14 pounds of fresh food (approximately 56 cups), and the 10 pound bag makes 46 pounds of fresh food (approximately 184 cups).

Can I feed my dog this and only this? No need to supplement with anything else?
Answer by ChewySep 14, 2022
This recipe is considered a complete and balanced meal and can be served on its own or along side a kibble recipe.

How long does this bag of food last unopened, if stored in a cool, dark place?
Answer by ChewyMar 31, 2022
All types of food have a shelf-life of 18 months and the treats have a shelf-life of 14 months. The best by date will be listed on the back of the bag.

Can this be pre-mixed, then kept frozen until ready to use?
Answer by ChewyFeb 09, 2021
It is recommended to prepare fresh. After rehydrating the food, it should consumed within 4 hours.

Dogs are loving this!

Very popular with our pack. I believe in feeding pets a variety of proteins and am happy to add fish to their diet. This product rehydrates quickly and apparently it is delish!

Good but not great

I recently found Grandma Lucy's when looking for a homemade dog food substitute that was made from limited ingredients, didn't contain egg (allergen for one of our dogs), and at an acceptable price point. I've tried a couple different formulas and have found that our sensitive dog does best on their Macanna Salmon, which Chewy doesn't currently carry. Because I love Chewy and prefer to buy as much as I can through them, I decided to try the Pureformance Fish recipe one more time. Unfortunately she just doesn't do as well on it (itchier, more poop/looser stool, etc). I used this Grandma Lucy's recipe as a kibble topper for our other two dogs and they loved it/didn't have any issues.

Hypnos food

I put my dog Hypnos on a freeze dried diet approximately 2 months ago. He really liked the fish flavor.

Perfect for allergies

My senior pit mix has had pretty bad allergies and yeast problems over the last 2 years. This food has helped alleviate his symptoms and scratch/lick less. Great price point too compared to other brands

Wayyyyy too much poop!!

I bought this on a recommendation from someone I met at the dog park because of my dogs allergies. And I have two dogs. I was feeding them the recommended amount from this recipe and I’ve never seen so much poop before in my entire life. My dog literally poops now four times a day. Both of them. It’s just unmanageable. I need to go back to Roth because they poop maybe once a day at the most. This is more poop than I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Dogs love it, I love it

Dogs love it, I love it. Keeping healthy weight and giving them a life full of spunk. No more allergies, all going strong on 16 years, it must be doing something good.

Loose smelly stools

My two boys eat this food and seem to enjoy it, but even after trying different proteins and fully transitioning to this food, their stools are never firm. The consistency of the prepared food is weird, sort of gummy. I wanted to like this food but since my yard isn’t fenced, the boys use potty pads at night. They are both under 25lbs and since transitioning to this food their stools became extremely foul smelling. Wake you up in the middle of the night from the other end of the house, bad. We are transitioning to a new food now, and as I decrease the grandma Lucy’s, the smell is finally going away.

Loves all food but not this one

My doggie is an aggressive eater and won’t turn his nose up to much, but he does not like this food at all.

My pescatarian canine scarfed this

She loved the taste and her notoriously sensitive stomach didn’t have a negative reaction. Her farts are pungent but I think it’s likely due to the change in diet and quality.
