Hamsters need big cages. If you don't have the space or money DONT buy a hamster. Hamsters are living creatures don't be selfish.. This cage is equivalent to a human living in a space as big as a regular sized house bathroom, this is their whole life. This ISNT OK!!
This cage debuted in the 1990’s. It is now offered in different colors with the habitrail house. At that time it was an interesting and fun new cage design. We now know more about the respiratory and space needs of the animals we keep as pets. This was a cage that we carried at our store for sale in the 90’s but we warned parents that cleaning it was not that much fun. It was also kinda a waste of space where ever you kept it because it’s a circle but takes up the same foot print as a square cage. When you add in the fact that there is inadequate air flow which allows the ammonia to build up which damages your pet’s respiratory system. It’s also not a lot of space especially if you want to add in cardboard boxes and other fun things for them to chew and build nests out of. So is it the worst cage out there? No. Are there several cages that are cheaper, offer more space and more ventilation? Yes. These are just facts. Read them and decide what’s important to you and make your decision. I can tell you that this is not a cage that we would carry today at our store due to what we now know. Certain things like exact amount of space needed and the ease of cleaning are more subjective. The lack of air flow is objective and I can testify the odor of ammonia when you open it is very overwhelming. I know I wouldn’t be comfortable leaving my pet in a cage like this. Others may be fine with their pets in a cage like this.
Easy to assemble, easy to clean (once the bathroom is determined), changeable (easy to move pieces around, add/remove pieces) durable locks (escape proof), spacious (actually bigger than I thought). I love that it has other pieces you can add. I added the habitat extension. The ONLY bad thing about this setup is the wheel. Although it has a gap to allow messes to drop into a catch area for easy cleanup, this gap can also catch little feet and is extremely dangerous. I removed the wheel.
Habitrail makes literally the BEST habitats EVER!!! All the ppl constantly complaining about sq feet etc making others aweful about getting regular cages instead of building HUGE loft McMansions LOL just STOP- ur hamster, mouse, rat etc will be PERFECTLY fine in whatever cage you get that suits YOUR needs and SPACE availability. Not everyone has space for a 50 inch + cage. Nor does everyone have the 2 hours it would take to clean it. And most importantly it is NOT necessary for your pet or their health. What necessary is you spending TIME with them and keeping their cage clean. The END. So get the cage YOU want. I had a mouse that was living in a BIG cage that was a pain to clean every time but I felt “compelled” to give him the “proper” living space quarters according to the so called online self “experts” and after a year I switched him to this cage- guess what little guy was never happier in his life. He did not like. Nor needed ALL that extra space. He LOVED this cage. And we loved it becuz it’s beautiful and very easy to keep clean. He was perfectly happy and content and healthy living up to his old age. So moral of the story GET THE CAGE YOU WANT for your pet they’ll be perfectly happy
This cage and the entire line of cages is the exact opposite of everything a hamster needs. It's tiny and you cannot even fit a proper wheel in the cage
I originally had my Winter White drawf in an aquarium and he seemed to be getting bored so I decided to switch to the Habitrail. I wanted to make sure he had plenty of room so I also bought the Suite and the Loft. Any one of them by themselves seemed too small. My little guy loves his new home. From the time I put him in he explored everything the rest of the day. I don't have any issues with the wheel as I've read from other reviews because he's a really clean hamster and doesn't pee or poop in his wheel. I think this is the perfect size for a dwarf and can't see putting anything larger in like a Syrian.
This was simple to put together, easy to expand with plenty of add-on accessories, and the perfect little home for our robo. I definitely recommend this. Also, the habitrail all comes apart for ease of cleaning.
This is probably the WORST type of habitat for any creature. Completely unnatural. Chewy has many other wonderful products for housing your hamster. Please do LOTS of research before you buy or rescue a hamster. PLEASE DO NOT BUY ANY ANIMAL FROM A PET STORE. The breeding conditions are HORRIFIC! Please consider rescuing a hamster or working with a reliable breeder. Syrian hamsters are almost extinct in the wild. A hamster needs a lot of care and maintenance of it's habitat. Hamsters are nocturnal and are not an appropriate animal for small children. They sleep all day and typically awaken at dusk and dawn for a few hours. DO NOT BUY WIRE WHEELS. DO NOT USE SCENTED OR PINE BEDDING. PLEASE RESEARCH BEFORE DECIDING TO CARE FOR ANY ANIMAL. IT IS A LIFELONG COMMITMENT (their life). Hamsters need fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. They need a sand bath. They need places to burrow and hide and sleep. They need a constant supply of fresh water, feed, and treats (scatter feeding is best). They need lots of space to live in. PLASTIC IN NOT A NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. The only reason I rated this product with one star is because negative stars aren't an option. Animals ARE NOT toys! They are creatures with souls and wonderful personalities. If you don't understand this then you should not care for any type of animal. You do not own animals. Humans are responsible for taking care of other living creatures.
My kids enjoyed building this and combining with another habitrail habitat for their mini hamster. This was supposed to be a fun upgrade from a glass aquarium, but the wheel has got to go! We noticed the first day that poo and fluff was coming out of the hole that runs along the center of the wheel. So, I ran some sticky tape along the center of the wheel all the way around. That worked for a while, but when it failed it really FAILED. POO everywhere. If a hamster cage can't contain the poo what is the point? We almost want to get rid of it and go back to a glass aquarium, though this thing is more interesting. I do worry that the kids will forget to latch one of the many places it opens and the thing will get lose.
i really like it for my robo hamster but i think it just might be a little bit small even for him it can get really stinky cause it dosent have alot of air holes and there not big enough so it just stays inside the cage and can hurt the hamsters sense of smell and the bottle is a little leaky this is my second hamster and they cage i had before was probably double the size and cheaper also there is no room for a sand bath and they need those so i have to take it out and he can get away easy but its not horrible
