  2. Place your dog on the pad several times so he can smell the pad and get used to it.
  3. While your dog is eliminating on the pad, use a phrase like "go potty" so that eventually you can use the command and your dog will understand what it means.
  4. Immediately after the dog eliminates on the pad, reward him with praise and a treat.
  5. If you dog has an accident, bring him back to the pad immediately. Continue bringing your dog back to the pad to reinforce that this is the place to go potty.

FAQ

How long does it take to housebreak a puppy?

Typically, a puppy can only hold its waste for an hour for each month of age (i.e. a 3 month old puppy has to relieve itself every 3 hours). Training takes consistency and patience. Whether you are crate training, paper training, or both, puppies may not be fully housebroken until they are 8-12 months of age.

What are the main uses for Hartz training pads?

Hartz training pads can be used to protect your home from soiling, to housebreak your puppy, to provide a comfortable environment for your dog to relieve itself when you are away from home, as area for indoor dogs to relieve themselves and as a convenient place for your pet to relieve itself when he refuses to go outside.

How do I use training pads for housebreaking?

Place the pad colored plastic side down. Let the dog or puppy smell the pad and get used to it. Hartz® Maximum Protection pads have been treated with a special grass scent to attract your puppy to the pad. If your pet relieves itself somewhere else, bring it back to the pad immediately. Continue bringing your dog or puppy back to the pad and reward him with treats and praise when he uses the pad to reinforce that this is the place to soil. Once your pet has learned to relieve itself on the pad, bring the pads gradually closer to the door and finally outdoors to complete the housebreaking process.

My dog has eaten the puppy pad-what now?

A small amount in a larger puppy most likely won’t cause serious issues but a smaller puppy ingesting some could cause problems. If you note any vomiting or abnormal behavior, consult your veterinarian.

What do I do if my dog or puppy has an accident in the house?

It is important not to become angry or frustrated as this may confuse the dog or cause it to secretly soil areas when you are not around. Continue with consistent training and thoroughly clean soiled surfaces with a strong product designed to remove tough stains and odors rather than cover them up.

    Would go larger next time

    By on

Even though I was given the measurements of the pad, I didn't realize how small it would be until I opened one up. I got the pads because our dog was pooping inside every night for over a week. At the same time I got the pads, we changed her diet, and the problem stopped. Now we have the pads but after leaving one out for a week unused, we threw it away and will save the rest for a needed time. Our dog is a 17-pound Mini Schnauzer and the pads are 21x21.

    They Work For Us

    By on

I'm not using these for a dog. I have a little old lady cat who tries her best to go in the box. But sometimes she misses, a little or all the way. She is very finicky about the scent of "her things". These have no pheromones or scent on them. Somebody said they have a grass scent. I guess that's OK because before she accepted them, she had to really sniff them out. I was worried that she would reject these, as she has done with newspaper and mats. I set 1 or 2 of these under her boxes, leaving a few inches sticking out around. Now we are both happy.

lasts all day for old dog

I have an aging Yorkie who cannot hold it until I let him out, and so he uses the pad. I used to have to change pads during the day,but this brand holds the pee and lasts all day. It doesn't look thick, but it really contains it and doesn't run off like other pads I tried.

    excellent puppy pad

I have a chihuahua and he uses these w/o fail. They don’t leak and they handle odor well. When I come home or folks come to the house, you’d never know I have a puppy pad dog. I take Esteban to work with me and he is housebroke, except when i have to go somewhere I can’t take him, it rains or it’s cold. These pads keep both of us happy.

    Do NOT recommended....

I order 100 to 150 pads once a month. I have tried several brands. This one, I purchased last month and am currently using. I still have about 25 left. Several times that I have changed the pads, the urine had went through the pad onto the floor. I THOUGHT at first that the girls were missing the pad, but that wasn't the case at all. I will finish this pack off, but will never purchase this brand again. They are extremely flimsy. All other brands have been great and not leaked. They are advertised to have a gel that absorbs urine, but they do not. I've never been so disappointed in pee pads. NOT disappointed in Chewy, just the brand. I'm extremely satisfied with Chewy. Your Serene Highness

    By on

I’ve tried almost every brand available & these by far are the best. The large are rather small so I switched to the x-large. I learned to overlap the pads when I put them down. I have one section of a room that is for the pads. Sparky has a habit of peeing right where the pads overlap. By overlapping the pads, usually there’s no mess. When I used the large the pee would pretty much cause it to spread past the edge of the pad. The x-large took care of that problem. I highly recommend this brand’s pads. Thanks.

    Not worth the money

    By on

I bought a pack of 100. They are the worst pads I have ever used. One pee and they are soaked thru to the floor. I dont have big dogs either. It's sad that every single time they were leaking on my floor. I had to double them up to prevent this and therefore only got 50pads to use. Totally recommend paying a little more for better pads, unless you like moping your floor daily.

Not crazy about these, the edges are sticky

    By on

I am trying these for the first (and last time). The edges are sticky and if you have a couple next to each other they stick together. When you try and take one up, it will stick to the other one. Not getting these again.
