Is there any sodium? What is the recommended amount of fish to give as a daily treat?

Answer by ChewyJun 24, 2019
A 100-gram serving of Capelin contains approximately 60 milligrams of sodium, which is naturally occurring. While there is no limit on how many to feed daily, it's recommended to only feed these as a treat.

Are these cooked / smoked?

Answer by ChewyJun 03, 2019
These treats are air-dried in a similar process to those practiced by the Icelandic Vikings in 900 A.D.

Can this be given to cats as well as dogs?

Answer by ChewySep 11, 2019
These treats are specially formulated for dogs.

What is the shelf life once opened. I have purchased these previously, but the last bag really smells “oily”

Answer by ChewyJan 13, 2020
Each bag will be slightly different based upon the number of male or female Capelin in the bag. A bag that has more female Capelin in it will contain more oil and will appear softer with a stronger smell. This is totally normal and is actually a good thing as the product contains a higher level of Omega oils. The unopened bag is shelf-stable for 2 years at least. After opening, and if properly re-sealed between treatings, the Capelin will last at least 2 to 3 weeks.

My shepherd/husky mix loves these. Unfortunately, they've been discontinued. Seems the Capelin catch has failed the last couple of years. That makes it tough to get a reliable supply that meets US regulations (no air dried fish longer than 4.5 inches. go figure). However, Icelandic+ is coming out with air dried Herring for both dogs and cats.

Our labs received their first bag of Capilin fish treats from the Dachshunds cousins. I thought they were unusual and wondered how our Labs would like them. They absolutely LOVE these little fishes! I will take one and break it into three pieces and share a piece with each pup. Over the cause of a day they may get one full fish.

My Husky LOVES these treats. I give her one before I leave the house, and she forgets that I'm leaving :) They are not meant to be long lasting - she can gobble one up in 30 seconds. Healthy & only one ingredient. We will continue to re-order these from Chewy for a long time!

Go nuts for fish

I really like the idea of single ingredient treats. My dog loves them too! He knows where i keep them and sits infront of the cabinet wearing his good boy face

I really like the idea of single ingredient treats. My dog loves them too! He knows where i keep them and sits infront of the cabinet wearing his good boy face. They are a good size too, each fish is maybe 3 or 4 inch long. They are on the expensive side so I will be watching out for any promotions so I can stock up.

Nice change from typical fish treats! You can snap them off into smaller pieces. I keep them in a zip lock bag in my treat pouch when training as they do have a stronger scent than other treats and can be a bit oily -but my dog really loves them so it's not an issue.

I normally purchase the dehydrated minnows for my adult dog that has been on raw diet for several years, but those are a bit too pricey for us, so we opted for the larger bag size and less expensive, per treat price, of the CAPELINS. The fish are huge and my dog only has 2 teeth so I have been soaking the fish overnight to soften them before serving. My little Silky Terrior loves them!
