What is the nutritional value of Montmorillonite Clay?

Answer by ChewyOct 15, 2018
This clay has been prescribed to help dogs with diarrhea caused by radiation and chemotherapy cancer treatments. According to evidence from studies, the clay can be an effective alternative to other anti-secretory agents which can cause serious complications ranging from nausea to anemia, including neurological issues.

Are any of the ingredients from China?

Answer by ChewyOct 16, 2019
Instinct will source most of their ingredients from the U.S. and turn to other locations only as needed. They are very stringent on sourcing and have good relationships built with their vendors for quality ingredients. All poultry, pork, and fish come from the U.S. (salmon meal from the U.S./Canada/Chile). Fish is fresh-caught from the Atlantic and Pacific. Beef and lamb are from the U.S., venison is from the U.S. and New Zealand, and rabbit is from France. The vegetables and fruits are from the U.S. and Europe depending on the ingredients. Grains and starches are sourced from the U.S., Canada, and Brazil - herbs and spices from North America and Europe. Vitamins and minerals are from North America, Europe, and Asia. Instinct takes every step to source non-China ingredients where they can. They do not source any meat, poultry or fish from China. Their raw frozen diets are also not made with any ingredients from China. The kibble diets may contain minor ingredients (vitamins, trace nutrients) sourced from China to ensure supply is guaranteed. Their approved supplier has put in measures to assure food safety and traceability from a trusted supply chain.

When will taurine be added to this dogfood?

Answer by ChewyJun 25, 2019
Taurine is naturally occurring within meat. Because their recipes are meat-rich at Instinct, all recipes have more than adequate levels of taurine, given the amount of animal ingredients they include, so it is not added synthetically.

Is this food non-GMO, organic food ingredients/free of pesticides, ingredients fully traceable?

Answer by ChewyJul 22, 2022
Instinct recipes are made with non-GMO fruits and vegetables. That being said, their recipes cannot be classified as fully organic. To labeled as such, even the foods the proteins are fed must be certified organic, and they cannot 100% confirm each animal’s diet given the slight variances among suppliers.

I have purchased the salmon & brown rice formula for my 2 large breed dogs for years. The manufacturer has changed the ingredients - they added chicken as the second ingredient. If I wanted to feed by dogs chicken, I’d buy a chicken based formula. I want to feed my dogs a salmon based food. My dogs can’t eat chicken. Poor business decision - you just lost a loyal customer!

Have just read many recent reviews concerning this product & change in formula, this was recommended by my vet yrs ago,I have golden doodles, just realized they added chicken, doodles can’t have chicken causes excessive itching, irritation, redness & open wounds.Shame on Chewy for allowing this to happen, they should have dropped the product.I like Chewy & it’s convenience so I have switched to Purina Proplan sensitive salmon, disappointed they don’t add fruits & veggies but I can add that

Why change something that wasn’t broken? You added CHICKEN, why? Charge the same price and add junk fillers!! This was the best food for my 2 dogs. I have been buying this food for years. I did not pay any attention that the ingredients had changed the last time I bought this food. They started scratching like crazy. That’s when I read the ingredients and realized, you added chicken!! So disappointed in the instinct company!!

Very upset that this recipe has changed to include chicken meal. The company still has “no fillers” advertised on the back of the bag which is misleading. My pitbull is very allergic to chicken and Chewy did nothing to alert me of the change of ingredients. His skin infection turned systemic and he ended up needing 3 separate medications, and multiple visits to the vet. $800 later, my boy is finally feeling better. This is very frustrating since there was no sticker on my bag alerting me of this change. I do see now that the bags in the store have a small sticker on the bag ( that doesn’t stand out very much). More should have been done to alert the customer before my autoship was just sent out to me. My boy suffered needlessly.

Instinct be natural SALMON was our go to food for a long time because our dogs have sever allergies. An ingredient change was made with no notice and now the food contains chicken meal. I didn't think to check the ingredients of our dog food until one of my dog's allergies turned into such a bad reaction he ended up at the vet. Not very happy at all with this change.

This is a warning to all pet parents who have a dog with chicken sensitivities or chicken allergies! Instinct Be Natural Salmon and Brown Rice used to proudly say they were poultry free... now the new recipe change includes chicken meal (2nd ingredient!!!) and chicken fat. Super disappointing. Check the recent 5 star ratings - they were all given the product free. Those dog parents didn't buy the food because it's good quality, or for any dietary reasons. They were given free food in exchange for ratings. We have been feeding our dog Instinct Be Natural Salmon & Brown Rice since 2020... when a 24 pound bag used to cost $49.99! We've stuck with the brand through many price increases, because their quality and ingredients were great. We will never feed our pup this new formula, for her own safety. This isn't a reflection of Chewy, at all. Chewy is incredible, and we will still shop their site. This is a warning and complaint against Instinct. Shame on them for cutting corners and finding way to pinch pennies.

I have been feeding the old formula of this food (chicken-free) to my dogs for many years. All 4 of my dogs are experiencing diarrhea and refusing their meals (which is unusual for them). After realizing their food is now discontinued on Chewy, I did a little research and found out the formula had changed. I can no longer feed this food and have to switch to something completely different because it is no longer chicken-free. Why Instinct???

I was using this food due to chicken allergy. Like some of the other recent reviews, I noticed my dog itching more and didn't know why. Thankfully others pointed out the formulation change. Not sure if there is another fish that is NOT grain free diet which has been linked to some heart issues. Bummer!
