What is the nutritional value of Montmorillonite Clay?
Answer by ChewyOct 15, 2018
This clay has been prescribed to help dogs with diarrhea caused by radiation and chemotherapy cancer treatments. According to evidence from studies, the clay can be an effective alternative to other anti-secretory agents which can cause serious complications ranging from nausea to anemia, including neurological issues.

Are any of the ingredients from China?
Answer by ChewyOct 16, 2019
Instinct will source most of their ingredients from the U.S. and turn to other locations only as needed. They are very stringent on sourcing and have good relationships built with their vendors for quality ingredients. All poultry, pork, and fish come from the U.S. (salmon meal from the U.S./Canada/Chile). Fish is fresh-caught from the Atlantic and Pacific. Beef and lamb are from the U.S., venison is from the U.S. and New Zealand, and rabbit is from France. The vegetables and fruits are from the U.S. and Europe depending on the ingredients. Grains and starches are sourced from the U.S., Canada, and Brazil - herbs and spices from North America and Europe. Vitamins and minerals are from North America, Europe, and Asia. Instinct takes every step to source non-China ingredients where they can. They do not source any meat, poultry or fish from China. Their raw frozen diets are also not made with any ingredients from China. The kibble diets may contain minor ingredients (vitamins, trace nutrients) sourced from China to ensure supply is guaranteed. Their approved supplier has put in measures to assure food safety and traceability from a trusted supply chain.

When will taurine be added to this dogfood?
Answer by ChewyJun 25, 2019
Taurine is naturally occurring within meat. Because their recipes are meat-rich at Instinct, all recipes have more than adequate levels of taurine, given the amount of animal ingredients they include, so it is not added synthetically.

Is this food non-GMO, organic food ingredients/free of pesticides, ingredients fully traceable?
Answer by ChewyJul 22, 2022
Instinct recipes are made with non-GMO fruits and vegetables. That being said, their recipes cannot be classified as fully organic. To labeled as such, even the foods the proteins are fed must be certified organic, and they cannot 100% confirm each animal’s diet given the slight variances among suppliers.

Smells like rotten fish

My poodle loved this food when we dog sat another poodle. The mom shared the link and I ordered some. However, my bag smells like rotten fish! I even repackaged it into smaller ziplock bags to keep it fresh longer, as the other dog mom did, but it smells worse as time goes on. Fearing the raw coating was contaminated, I am now microwaving it to cook it before feeding her, but then it smells up the whole house. I forgot to heat it for dinner tonight and now she has gas that smells like rotten fish. This smell can’t be normal. I like salmon and I can’t stand this smell, like the salmon was left out to rot for a week. It nauseates me.

formula has changed or gotten contaminated

my dog has been eating this formula for years, and the past 2 bags have smelt different, she won’t even touch them and skips meals for days, and has developed terrible GI issues. i believe there was a change in the formula or the recent process has become contaminated because chewy replace my last bag and the issue persists and i’ve cut everything else out of her diet so this food is the only thing to remain. i’m not feeding her plain rice while researching what to switch her to

My dogs love this new food. My vet recommended I switch to a non grain free food for my dogs, as grain free foods can cause heart problems. I had my dogs tested because they had only eaten grain free food and their heart enzymes were elevated. This the change in food. Luckily there have been no long term effects and their levels should go back to normal in the next four months with the food change. Beware of all the pea, pea protein, etc.

last 2 out of 4 bags smell like chemicals

I’ve been feeding my 2 this salmon variety for a couple of years. Shortly after the bag changed, most of the time it smells like chemicals. I don’t even get a whiff of fish/salmon. Very disappointed that I’ll have to find a new food.

My dogs came running...

As soon as I opened this bag of food, my dogs came running. I usually have to do a slow transition when I change dog foods, but both dogs wanted some of this food as soon as they got a whiff of it. The small kibble is great for my small dogs, especially for my senior boy who has some teeth missing.

Excellent Dog Food

My dog needed to go on a different protein than she had been eating. I gradually changed her over and she loves this stuff. The ingredients are super and I just couldn't be happier.

Good Quality Food But Dog Won’t Eat

I love the instinct line and it’s quality ingredients. It’s also the only dog food I’ve ever opened that actually smells appetizing and smells like the ingredients on the label- a great sign. Usually, the more meaty it smells, the more a dog is likely to eat it. My dog on the other hand refuses! We just switched from hills which he also refused after a month. Picky eater on my hands and I’ve been trying everything. A BIG con though is the zip on the bag, it’s completely useless..
