Questions & Answers

14 Customer Questions

Why are there so many meal products in this food?
Answer by ChewyApr 01, 2021
Meal is a dried and more concentrated form of the mammal, poultry, or fish protein. This is essentially meat with the moisture removed. If you feed a high-quality kibble like Instinct with chicken meal as the first ingredient, your cat is getting all of the benefits of this highly digestible protein. It is important to make sure the meal is protein specific and not generic like meat meal or by-product meal, which by definition can contain any species or part of the animal.

What is the food coated with? I’m new to raw diets so the name is a bit confusing
Answer by ChewyApr 25, 2022
First Instinct freezes their raw recipes and then it is freeze dried (to remove the moisture naturally found in food). The freeze-dried raw food is then ground into a powder. After the kibble is made it is tumbled with a topical oil and the freeze dried raw food which allows it to stick. This tumbling is done after the kibble is cooked, so the coating is still raw.

Why is Tapioca used in this food? Does Tapioca have any Nutritional benefits for Cats?
Answer by ChewyAug 13, 2019
Tapioca is a starch derived from the root of the cassava plant. It is a unique, 98% digestible, grain-free, gluten-free starch source that serves as a natural binder and nutritious ingredient in their Instinct Kibble Diets.

What is the mercury content of this food?
Answer by ChewyJun 12, 2019
While Nature's Variety doesn't test for the mercury amount in the final product, they do test the levels of the fish they use before adding it to the product. The amount of mercury in salmon is really low so there isn't much concern on using salmon in this formula.

Cats keep throwing this food up

This is a new food for my cats. They have been eating if for about a week. Each of them keep throwing it up. Not sure what is happening, but I do not recommend or plan on purchasing it again. My cats aren't sensitive to new foods typically, so to me this isn't a good sign on the 'good' quality of this food or brand.

Cat food bag arrived torn

When I picked up the box and heard stuff rattling I knew something was off. The salmon dry food bag was ripped. First time its happened but still not good any time.

Real Salmon freeze dried.

My cat refuses to eat it. I bought it under my own accords. I need something that is grain free and real salmon dry food. She only likes to eat this Purina salmon with brown rice.

Didn't work for us

Unfortunately all three of my cats have been throwing up a lot since we started this food. Two of them never had issues in the past. :(

Quality Food

If your cat isn’t into fish they won’t like this cat food… that being said mine hates chicken but loves fish so she loves this cat food. Never forgets to remind me when she’s hungry. I will say though it does smell really strong! I feed my cat in the laundry room where my dog can’t get to it and it’s made my laundry room smell like fish can’t get rid of the smell. But, who cares as long as your pets are fed right

Great food

I have an old cat. For 12 years hes vomited almost daily. We've tried everything (raised bowls, limited feeding, hairball gel, prescription food, EVERY food!...etc etc.) In 3 weeks he has not vomited once. I refered my neice to this miracle food because her cat has similar digestive problems. After 1 week no vomiting there either. Im not sure whats in this food but my cat is bouncing around the house like a kitten now. He is super happy and energetic. Highly recommended.

Best food ever

This is the only dry food my IBD kitty has been able to eat without giving her diarrhea. Great food and Gracie can have her dry food and not feel left out when her sisters are eating their dry food.

Finally Found a Good Dry Food My Cat Will Eat

One of my three cats will only eat dry AND would only eat Meow Mix. I've always felt bad feeding him this (no offense to others who feed their cats MM) and from time to time I try to get him to eat something better. He loves this! As do my other two cats.

Instinct grain free food

I use this as a treat for my cats. They love salmon! I don’t use dry food as a main staple for my cats. Dry food dehydrates them. But as a treat it’s great.
