Questions & Answers

18 Customer Questions

Why are there so many meal products in this food?

Answer by ChewyApr 01, 2021
Meal is a dried and more concentrated form of the mammal, poultry, or fish protein. This is essentially meat with the moisture removed. If you feed a high-quality kibble like Instinct with chicken meal as the first ingredient, your cat is getting all of the benefits of this highly digestible protein. It is important to make sure the meal is protein specific and not generic like meat meal or by-product meal, which by definition can contain any species or part of the animal.

What is the food coated with? I’m new to raw diets so the name is a bit confusing

Answer by ChewyApr 25, 2022
First Instinct freezes their raw recipes and then it is freeze dried (to remove the moisture naturally found in food). The freeze-dried raw food is then ground into a powder. After the kibble is made it is tumbled with a topical oil and the freeze dried raw food which allows it to stick. This tumbling is done after the kibble is cooked, so the coating is still raw.

Why is Tapioca used in this food? Does Tapioca have any Nutritional benefits for Cats?

Answer by ChewyAug 13, 2019
Tapioca is a starch derived from the root of the cassava plant. It is a unique, 98% digestible, grain-free, gluten-free starch source that serves as a natural binder and nutritious ingredient in their Instinct Kibble Diets.

Does this contain any chicken?

Answer by ChewyAug 20, 2025

After extensive research, switching my cat from Royal Canin (kitten formula) to Instinct Salmon for adult cats was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The transition was incredibly smooth no digestive issues at all and the adaptation was immediate and effortless. The ingredient quality is clearly a step above. My cat loves the taste, has great energy, a healthy coat, and overall looks better. I truly believe that investing in higher-quality nutrition like Instinct is a smarter choice than spending money later on unnecessary vet visits. Highly recommend this food to anyone looking to upgrade their cat’s diet with confidence.

My cats loved this food!! But it gave my cat kidney stones so bad he was peeing blood & we had to bring him to the emergency vet. Unfortunately I thought it was a better healthier food option for my cats. But ultimately it was worse. Note to self & others just because it costs more does not mean it’s always better.

I looked at the ingredients and everything looked great; however, one of my fur babies ended up at the vet and is still there. She had developed gastric and urinary issues and they are trying to stabilize her so she can come home. Overall, the ingredients are great but check the Ash and Phosphorous content if your fur baby has had any urinary tract issues. Guess I'll be gifting this bag to a friend who feeds a feral cat!

This food does not appear to have any poultry in it according to the ingredients on the label. However, considering how bad of a rash my cat gets from it, either the unidentified "natural flavor" in it is actually natural chicken flavor, or the food is badly contaminated by chicken in some way. Instinct really has no excuse being so vague on its ingredients label or using chicken flavoring in this otherwise chicken-free food. Is salmon flavoring too expensive or something? My cat is mildly allergic to poultry in general, but chicken REALLY bothers her. I guess I have to cross this off the list of chicken-free foods for her. Sad because she really loves this food, but that might be because of the probably chicken flavoring.

Love this

My kitten was on a chicken based diet and was extremely itchy with lesions. I had several tests done at the vet that were all negative. I decided to do a slow transition

My kitten was on a chicken based diet and was extremely itchy with lesions. I had several tests done at the vet that were all negative. I decided to do a slow transition off the food he was eating and onto this. Otis's coat is shiny, he's not itchy anymore and no more lesions. His coat is also softer.

Tummy troubles improved

My cat has a ridiculously sensitive stomach and this is the only food we have found that he doesn’t vomit it back up.
