does this filter take cartridges or would I need to order charcoal and filter medium?

This filter does not use cartridges. Place filter media inside the reservoir chamber of the filter’s main body. It is recommended to use medium-density sponges along with activated carbon and ceramic rings.

Not as described

Water flow was weak, 50gph, and pump motor began vibration after a few days. Filters clog , w pre filter in less than a week.

Can't modify

Disappointed that the media holding area has three vertical bars in the middle of it to hold the carbon cartridges that come with the filter. This makes it difficult

Disappointed that the media holding area has three vertical bars in the middle of it to hold the carbon cartridges that come with the filter. This makes it difficult if you plan to use sponge, ceramic rings and filter floss instead. Also, the surface skimmer requires that the water line be below the rim at least an inch. The only plus about this filter is the internal motor that doesn't require priming to start
