30% carbohydrates and rice based

Brands that take advantage of the ketogenic bandwagon without understanding it are very frustrating. I dont know if it's ignorance, or just hoping everyone *else*

Brands that take advantage of the ketogenic bandwagon without understanding it are very frustrating. I dont know if it's ignorance, or just hoping everyone *else* is ignorant. This product is *rice based* and about 30% carbohydrate. There is nothing ketogenic about this, and the misuse of labels make it hard for people to find the actual products they're looking for that actually *do* fit the label. If you're looking for low carb for your facultative carnivore, this isn't it.

Its not super clear but there are 2 main formulas. One high carb with rice to help transition pets from standard, junky pet food into something healthier and another low carb for pets already used to healthier, low carb food. The Foundation food is the high carb transition kibble. Its not actually keto as it has brown rice and is 24% carbs according to the manufacturer. The rice is there as a healthier starch to help adjust pet tummies away from the wheat/potato/pea fillers in most pet food. I would not suggest this for cat owners unless they're transitioning away from junky kibble. Cats should be eating food with 10% or less carb. Get the starch free 8ib bag for the low carb kibble if your pet is already transitioned. It's keto, no rice and is less than 5% carbs. If you have young cats the fat boost blend may be good. Worth noting the kibble can be hard. Adding a bit of broth/water helps soften but takes about 20 minutes. I use a wetfood auto feeder so the time to soften isn't an issue for us but may be a hassle for others.

My vet claims that "grain free" is not carbohydrate free, and cats' normal diet should not contain any carbohydrate at all. Therefore this product keeps them "crunchy happy" and fills in with poultry wet food as they wish, keeping their weight at normal for their size and age. It is also easier on their kidneys. I received the "fat boost" variety one time by mistake and definitely do not recommend it for cats.

My Gracie ( tabby cat) lost 2 lbs in the month and half she’s been on this food. Vet said she should go down to 10 pounds. She went from 12 pounds to 10 pounds in a month and a half. Her brother, Remi , ( also a tabby cat) was 18 pounds his vet appointment last year. He hates the scale so we don’t have an exact number, but his belly no longer touches the ground when he walks, he’s able to groom himself a lot more, best part is he has lots more energy and play time!! He can jump on the window sills and his cat tree now. Next vet appointment September 2021 so eager to hear the actual weight number!
