What is the highest and lowest setting? Can it be used with a stainless steel pan?

The K&H Universal Waterer Deicer is thermostatically controlled to turn on and off as needed to keep a waterer or bucket from freezing when placed on the deicer.  The thermostat is internal and is not adjustable.  It can be used with any material including stainless steel.
How hot does it get on the underside ? How concerned should I be setting it right on the floor of my coop where there is shavings and straw ?

This product is designed to keep water thawed, yet not hot. It includes TCO (Thermal Cut off) for safety and it's thermostatically controlled. The temperature of the heating element will depend on the temperature of the water. When submerged in water, the heating element doesn’t feel that warm to the touch, but it is designed to keep a stock tank from freezing over when choosing the correct deicer as per out zone chart. This item can be used with any waterer and it's perfect for chickens, ducks, horses, pets, goats, etc.
Can this be used with an extension cord?

We recommend that the cord be UL or MET rated. The cord is 25 feet or shorter and is made for outdoor use. MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. This is because they cannot test every extension cord on the market in conjunction with our products for safety. Also, MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product. Can I put this in water inside of a plastic bucket?

So Far So Good

We just got this so I haven't had an opportunity to see how well it will last. But we got it during the big cold front that hit at Christmas. It arrived late due to the weather, so we only had it the last 2 days of freezing temps. It thawed out our frozen 5 gallon waterer and has kept the water thawed. So I'm pleased with it so far. We'll see what the rest of winter brings.

Works great but only lasted 1 season

It did say to keep it out of the wind, and I live in very windy NE Nevada, but I found a spot that was sheltered enough and that the chickens will go to if I shovel a path from the henhouse. It worked until 1 week ago (end of November, start of 2nd season of use) and I just ordered another one. I love how chicken-proof it is and that all the elements are sealed inside. I also use a hanging heated nipple waterer in the hen house, but if it's really cold the top freezes in place and I have bring it indoors to warm up so I can get the lid off to refill it (a real pain).

  • It was still working Nov 8th, I just had to shovel the snow so the girls could get to it.

garbage and junk

If you live in an area where the sustained temperature is below 20*F don’t waste your money. When the temps got much colder the heater wouldn’t keep up and because it’s plastic the base became brittle and cracked. What a waste of my money. I would return them if I could!

USELESS after 2 months

Unit didn't even make it 3 months of occasional use before it stopped working. I have 20 angry chickens who'd like a drink, but it's a block of ice. When it worked, it was good.

Excellent for quail

Got this for my outdoor quail coop (Upstate New York, zone 5b). Two weeks in, and it works well. Keeps the water from freezing, but is cool enough for the birds to sit on it without getting hurt.

Great product

The product works great. We live at the top of Wisconsin with very cold winters. The chickens waterer has not froze once. I'm very pleased, and would recommend this deicer.

Unit Usage

Make sure to use the unit with dome side up. Water will get into unit thru the underside seam if used upside down.
