Can this be used with sand instead of gravel?

Answer by ChewySep 30, 2022
This filter is designed to be used with gravel.

Does this come with a pump?

Answer by ChewyDec 19, 2022
This product does not come with a pump, it includes 2 carbon cartridges, Discard-a-Stone, a fish-saver elbow, and a telescoping ring to adjust the height of the uplift tube.

What is the height of the tubes and are they adjustable?

Answer by ChewyDec 14, 2022
The tubes for this are not adjustable. The 5.5 gallon measures 5 x 1 inches, the 10 gallon measures 7 x 1 inches, the 20 gallon measures 9 x 1 inches, the 29 gallon measures 10 x 1 inches, the 30 gallon measures 11 x 1 inches, the 55 gallon measures 13.625 x 1 inches. We recommend the Lee's Aquarium & Pets Thinwall Ridge Tubing (sold separately) for a longer tube if adjusting is needed.

If using the under gravel filter, do you also need to use a normal water filter/pump setup?

Answer by ChewyJun 18, 2025
When using this under-gravel filter, it requires an air pump.

Under water

I think it got plugged. I lost a few fish in there. I didn’t like it. I took them out.

Unfortunately I didn't read the directions and took off all of the tabs on the underside of the black platform. When i put it in the tank, the swortails kept swimming underneath! I had to use my original platform, and was relieved to find the uplift columns fit after I removed the bottom section. Everything looks great, now that it's all done!
