do you have to connect to a pump?

The Mini Bubble Filter needs to connect to an air pump (sold separately) to operate.

Does the biological media at the bottom of the bubble filter have to be replaced periodically?

The biological media in the bottom of the filter provides the surface area for beneficial bacterial growth. It does not need to be replaced.

A really clever concept for small tanks and terrestrial turtle water pans, combining the oxygenating air power of filter sponges with an enclosed unit (that makes cleaning tasks easier - debris does not merely fall back into the tank). Use a better quality toxin-absorbing pellet than carbon, and rinse the sponge in distilled water to extend the life/usefulness of the replaceable media. Do some price shopping: Chewy's 3x price increase is not inflation - it's straight up gouging.
