Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT CAUSES CAT LITTER ODOR?

You don’t have a stinky cat, you have a stinky litter box. And while no animal has pleasant smelling waste, cat litter odor can be extra powerful. There are a variety of factors that make cat litter odor so strong. Cat urine is very concentrated, containing pheromones and hormones used to mark their territory. In addition, as cat urine breaks down, it releases an ammonia odor and mercaptans (the same smell produced by our smelly friend the skunk).

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CONTROL LITTER ODOR?

Controlling or eliminating litter odor is an issue that every cat owner has to tackle. The first step is to make sure your cat is properly trained and has access to a litter box with fresh litter in it. Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. The second step is maintaining the box by removing used litter regularly. Scoop clumps into a Litter Genie® pail to help lock litter and odor away.

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO ELIMINATE LITTER ODORS?

Rule number one is always keep a clean litter box. Having a Litter Genie® pail next to your litter box is a great way to ensure that you have a place to lock away your used litter to keep your home fresh and your cat happy.

HOW MANY LITTER BOXES SHOULD I HAVE?

Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. That will make sure your cat always has a place to go!

MY CAT MISSED THE LITTER BOX, WHAT DO I DO?

If it’s a one time issue, treat the affected area with water, vinegar and mild soap and blot dry. If it’s a repeated issue, consider moving your litter box, retraining your cat, or visiting the vet to make sure it’s not a medical issue.

MY CAT MISSED THE LITTER BOX, WHAT DO I DO?

HOW DEEP SHOULD MY LITTER BE?

Most cats prefer two inches of litter or less. Too deep, and your cat may not like their footing and opt to go to the bathroom elsewhere.

To get started:

  1. Insert the scoop holder in the grooves on either side.
  2. Insert the refill.

Inserting the refill:

  1. Pull the refill’s plastic tab and remove the outer rim.
  2. Start at the notch left by the tab, pull about one foot of film. Then push down the film through the center of the rim and tie a knot at the bottom.
  3. Open the lid and pull the funnel up. A lip around the inside of the unit will be visible. Place the refill so that it sits on the lip. Pull the handle and push the film down into the bottom chamber of the unit.
  4. Push down the funnel and close the lid.

  • Litter Genie is a Gem

    By on

I just adopted another Rescue cat, and needed another litter box. But my biggest problem was disposing of the clumps of litter. The household that my studio apartment is attached have two dogs that cleverly find ways of getting at the disposal boxes of the clumps of litter, so I believe this is the better way of disposing of them in our trash containers. The Genie is simple to use and doesn't take up much room in my bathroom. I also have another Genie located under my sewing table in another room. It does not smell and the cup on the side for the scoop is handy..

  • Where has this been all of my life??

I bought this on a whim, hoping it would be as fantastic as it was advertised by my a couple of my favorite animal pages (Kitten Lady, and Lil Bub) I was NOT disappointed! This makes my life easier and my kitties happier! I can clean my litter box without the hassle of bags, so I'm cleaning the litter box more often. My out of the box stinker has been going in the box! This has been a behavior that I have lived with since he was a kitten! I'm not trying to jinx myself but it's a miracle! I was thinking of buying an automatic box again, now this can save me some cash! Easy to use, easy to change. I'm on week 2 with 3 cats, and I still have plenty left in my refill. HIGHLY recommend.

  • Language Barrier

This product is new to me, but the reviews seem to indicate that the odor problem is eliminated. I found the instructions awful, the terms they use are confusing (funnel, handle, film) and the pictures are no help at all. I did finally figure it out the "handle" is the piece you pull out in the front to make the litter drop and the "film" is the liner. I still don't known what the funnel is. Chewy tells you that you know you need film replacement when you see a black line, the manufacturer does not. I am skeptical that that flimsy "film" can hold two months of my one cat's "cement", but that remains to be seen.

  • Does what it claims

I got this because I didn't want to smell cat poop. What can I say -- it's not the fragrance I am going for in my home. We have the Breeze litter box system -- which is absolutely amazing for containing all cat pee odors -- but it does nothing for poo. This contains that smell and only needs emptied once a week (or less, depending on number of cats/size/etc). One note, I didn't really load the bags right the first time -- watch the youtube video -- it makes everything very clear.

  • Loving it!!

I have had indoor only cats for the past 12 years and have tried many things for emptying the litter and where to store the used stuff each day if I don't put it in the outside trash everyday. I have had this for 2-3 weeks now and it is the best thing I have ever tried! No smell, one bag lasts at least a week (with 2 cats) and I am physically disabled and only have one hand to use and can use it very easily.

  • Better Than Expected!

This was purchased on a whim at my local pet store but the price at Chewy is equal to their sale price, so you can't go wrong ordering from here. I have for decades used a small trash can with a grocery bag holder (I made) to keep near the litter box...basically a cheap set up. I would line the small trash can with a grocery store bag, scoop the box, tie the bag in a knot & toss it in the big trash can but it did not control the odor after putting the bag in the big trash can. My system worked okay until we got a new kitten: he is a stinky kitty when he goes...really stinky! My system worked okay until we got a new kitten: he is a stinky kitty when he goes...really stinky! I was at my local pet shop picking up some pouch food for the cats when I saw the Litter Genie and thought why not, my system was failing miserably. It was easy to set up & instructions are not really needed. Mine was a little flimsy on the latching part in the middle: it didn't want to catch. The litter scoop and cup style holder that hangs on the side is completely useless for me because I have a large metal scoop that will not fit in the holder. I prefer the metal scoop due to using clumping litter and constantly breaking plastic scoops. I can't attest to how long the bag roll will last since I just started using it. I am guessing not as long as it would with 1 cat or 2 adult cats due to the kitten that goes more often than an adult. I had my doubts about the odor control but was proven to work & work excellent after the first "go" from the kitten. It has also been a week of use adding to it and absolutely no odor at all! I would like for the opening in the top to be larger but that is probably due to the large scoop I use more so than the actual design since the scoop included was a small one. I highly recommend this if you want zero odor without disposing of the "scoops" from the litter box each time you scoop it. I scoop the litter box every day & many times 2x a day which meant I left the tied bags in the small can until the end of the day & then have to take the smelly bag to the big trash can: yuck! This is much less work and zero odor. It is even worth the extra cost of the bag refills. … more

  • Pretty awesome.

    By on

So far this product is turning out to be a great buy. I dont think my house ever really smelled bad because of my litter box, but that was me walking out to the garbage 2 times a day with whatever old shopping bag i had tied in a knot, so inevitably my garage would take on "that" smell until trash day. Nasty. What i really like is that now i can just take out the week of litter on trash day and neither my house nor my garage smell at all.

  • No odors, really!!

    By on

So I do wish this has some of the design features of the other brand, but I am telling you if you want to stop odors, this is the one. It just works!! It is easy to use, the bags keep odors from escaping. The spring loaded door is the key with the bag material. I would recommend to anyone who wants to have cats, but not the cat litter box odors!!

  • This is One Great Product!!!

    By on

We didn't have a place for the litter box, so we put it in a spare room. We have been using Genie for more than 5 years and NO ODOR! People don't know we have a cat unless they see him. There is No mess, and our cat drinks water like a fish....... so there is always a big lump in the litter box. Love how easy it is to use.

  • Litter Genie Plus litter disposal system.

    By on

This is much better than just putting the "stuff" in the trash. Much less odor and easy to use. I like the semi-endless bag system like what is in the Diaper Genie product. The fact that it has a spring loaded isolation door is a great idea! Keeps most of the odor in the container. A+ on this product!
