FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT CAUSES CAT LITTER ODOR?

You don’t have a stinky cat, you have a stinky litter box. And while no animal has pleasant smelling waste, cat litter odor can be extra powerful. There are a variety of factors that make cat litter odor so strong. Cat urine is very concentrated, containing pheromones and hormones used to mark their territory. In addition, as cat urine breaks down, it releases an ammonia odor and mercaptans (the same smell produced by our smelly friend the skunk).

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CONTROL LITTER ODOR?

Controlling or eliminating litter odor is an issue that every cat owner has to tackle. The first step is to make sure your cat is properly trained and has access to a litter box with fresh litter in it. Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. The second step is maintaining the box by removing used litter regularly. Scoop clumps into a Litter Genie® pail to help lock litter and odor away.

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO ELIMINATE LITTER ODORS?

Rule number one is always keep a clean litter box. Having a Litter Genie® pail next to your litter box is a great way to ensure that you have a place to lock away your used litter to keep your home fresh and your cat happy.

HOW MANY LITTER BOXES SHOULD I HAVE?

Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. That will make sure your cat always has a place to go!

MY CAT MISSED THE LITTER BOX, WHAT DO I DO?

If it’s a one time issue, treat the affected area with water, vinegar and mild soap and blot dry. If it’s a repeated issue, consider moving your litter box, retraining your cat, or visiting the vet to make sure it’s not a medical issue.

HOW DEEP SHOULD MY LITTER BE?

Most cats prefer two inches of litter or less. Too deep, and your cat may not like their footing and opt to go to the bathroom elsewhere.

  • Love the Genie!

    By on

Love the Litter Genie. No more hauling bags to the garage trash everyday - and no stink in the garage or by the litter box. It really does keep the smell contained in the bottom compartment! I empty once weekly now on trash day! Also - Kudos to Chewy. My first Genie came a bit woppy jawed due to the 30 lb bag of dog food it shipped with. So the bottom didn't seal well. I sent Chewy a message and they immediately shipped a replacement. Love Chewy & my Litter Genie. Buy one, you won't be disappointed! PS to the person who said the waste didn't drop. Mine didn't either the first time or two. Once the refill ring loosens a bit from use - it will!

  • I must be doing something wrong...

Either I did/am doing something wrong or the bags are too tight in the cartridge? When I set it up, as directed (or at least I thought, anyway) I pulled the bag down thru the center to get it started. But when I scooped the soiled litter into the top and pulled the lever to dispense it, it didn't "fall". The first time I assumed I just didn't pull the bag down far enough to begin so I took it apart and manually pulled the bag down to get it to close. The second time I pulled the bag down all the way to the bottom of the container so I wouldn't have to deal with that mess again which, in my opinion, is missing part of the point of this thing. Is that how it's supposed to be? I was under the impression Either I did/am doing something wrong or the bags are too tight in the cartridge? However, once I do get it dispensed and closed, there is no dirty litter stink, so that is a huge positive! … more

  • Excellent product!

    By on

We’ve been using these for about 3 years. Got a new one to go with an additional litter box (got a new cat), but our original Litter Genies are still holding up great after 3 years. We have one for each litter box, and change the bag about once a week. No smell at all between bag changes! The only drawback is sometimes the refills aren’t loaded properly in the cartridge and you waste half the cartridge trying to find the end but that’s probably only happened 3-4 times in 3 years which is about 100 cartridges for us, so it’s pretty rare.

  • Should of got this sooner

I've got nothing but good things to say about Litter Genie. I've got three cats and keeping their tray clean has always been a chore. Id have to get out a litter bag, unstick it, open it up, empty the tray and take it out to the trash 5 times a day! This has simplified everything and on average I'm emptying it every 3-4 days. At first I was a little nervous about how long a refill would last vs cost efficiency, and it's surprisingly really good. I'm still on the first refil and it's been in about a month! Worth the money for me! The only weak spot for me is the scoop is pretty useless, which I guess when I factor in the price of the system it would be.

  • Nice system for cat litter

    By on

I have 4 cats and 2 genie systems. I find I go thru 1 cartridge per month per system. That is pretty close to their estimated usage. The smell is less with this system. The bucket itself is designed well with one small complaint. The top of the bucket where you place the used litter is small. You sort of have to use their scoop or you will make a mess. To me, this slows down my process. But it's still better than anything else I've ever tried. I guess I'm just trying to rush through my 4 jumbo litter pans. Good system. Affordable cartridges. Excellent odor control.

  • DO NOT BUY

    By on

First, let me say I absolutely LOVE Chewy! However, this particular item does not live up to their stellar reputation. The liner just fills up and does not seal between each load - therefore it is not much better than having a big trash can of waste in your room. It does not contain smell. It is VERY difficult to remove liner when fill - actually after multiple tries and nasty litter on floor - I threw away the entire unit. Not like the ‘Diaper Genie’. .

  • Litter Ginnie

    By on

I absolutely love the Litter Ginnie. It's so much better than scooping the litter into the garbage. My only complaint is that the.bags do not hold up to 10 weeks worth of waist like they say it does. I have 1 kitten, he's around 16 months old. I need to change the litter Ginnie bag around every 3 or 4 weeks, which is still good but again, the bags do not hold up to 10 weeks worth of waist. Other than that the Litter Ginnie is awesome!!

  • Love this product

Easy to assemble and use. Keeps odors trapped. I use the poopie bags too. It keeps the litter cobtained and I don't have to clean this out. The double plastic works well to contain odor. I used a garbage pail and lid prior to purchasing this product and everytime I opened the lid it smelled like a diaper pail. Stunk up the room. No more stink! I wish kitchen garbage bags were available in this material.

  • Top heavy, but otherwise good

    By on

I have ferrets, not cats. I use this to hold soiled piddle pads and empty it every 2-3 days depending on how much they poop. Overall I like it, but when empty, it is VERY top heavy. Not good when you have three ferrets that must investigate everything you touch. Still, does it's job well. No odor problem, like before when I just kept a small trash bag sitting on top of their cage for 2-3 days. I assume it works well with cats too.

  • Great tool!

    By on

This is a great tool for daily scooping. The litter box is upstairs in a child's bathroom. It is so convenient to have the genie right there next to it for daily scooping by our 11 year old. We were used to a diaper genie so it follows the same concept except it doesn't spin. If it would spin like the diaper genie, I would have given it 5 stars. I just wish you didn't have to "open" the area where the scooped litter was every time you put more in. Even with the top shut, you can smell it a little while you are opening for the new to drop down.
