I was disappointed with the new filter for a couple of reasons. It has a very cheap feel to it. Very cheaply made. And it came disassembled without instructions on correct assembling of it. It did have a trouble shooting guide. The intake for the water only goes a few inches below the water line as opposed to other filters that go almost to the bottom of the tank. Overall - I would not purchase this brand again.
Didn't last

Quiet but had to modify...

I needed to find an outside filter for my 6 gallon planted tank and this seemed like it would be a good choice, however my poor Betta couldn't manage the output from this filter after only a minute of turning it on. I did consider that ahead of time, and after it sat for weeks, I realized with a simple hole drilled through the intake, inside the filter, just above the impeller compartment, it draws water back from inside the filter, slowing down the water flow back into the tank. (I also put some sponge in the intake strainer because my Betta likes to sit against it, and I have many tiny snails) It is such an easy and amazing trick that I see many people have the same problem when putting an external filter on a smaller tank. I hope this helps someone, my tank is now running much better than with the internal filter. As for noise, I haven't had any problems, this filter is very quiet.
I love this filter.
I have six tanks. All I use are these filters. I love them.

I love Marineland filters. I have them running in each of my 4 tanks. However, this one did not come with an extension tube, so I had to force the intake cover to make it fit. I honestly looked at this and thought maybe it was a Chinese lookalike but nope this is Marineland... Thankfully I'd purchased the Marineland Penguin 100 power filter so that one will be a backup in case this one fails.
good filter system for the price
nice looking filter i will always buy from marineland

Randomly quits. I had a Penguin BioWheel that I bought used back in the 90's. The thing still works after 19 years of continuous use, though it has gotten a little touchy. So, when setting up a new 15 gallon tank, I bought this Penguin 75, expecting the same kind of reliability as the old one had. I was so wrong. Bought two of these Penguin 75s (one as a backup.) The first quit after about a month; the impeller quit spinning, and no amount of monkeying could get it going again. Replaced it with the second. The second has been incredibly touchy, with the impeller randomly quitting on several occasions, and me having to monkey with it to get it going again. Now today, I find that the second has run itself dry overnight, despite the tank being full to the brim and the intake tube being perfectly fit and well below the water line. It was steaming when I added water back in, it had gotten so hot. It has now killed our good bacterial colony, though fortunately we found it in time that my fish are unharmed. I want to add that we also bought four Penguin 350s at the same time. 3 out of the 4 of those have been temperamental and quit randomly. One started grinding its impeller, and I had to give it a new impeller from another 350 to make it work again. The others are just unreliable, and the impeller will quit at random times, with no apparent cause. I can't find any debris stuck in them, or any visible reason for them to quit. And then if I monkey with the thing, it just starts working again. I will never buy another Penguin filter again. We are looking into replacing every last one of them before they kill our fish.
