This filter assembly is quite large, wider than the equivalent non-pro penguin model. Check your dimensions before buying. The adjustable valve is useful if your fish are sensitive to water flow, although it is a little fiddly to manage initially. There are a lot of options for intake, but it feels like this is best suited for larger tanks. The base of the inlet is huge, but again, I feel like these pieces are meant to be catered to the aquarium. Every adjustment is built-in, so no need to retrofit or drill holes in the inlet. Also not having to endlessly prime this thing is great. One more thing I'll mention: initially the filter and bio-wheel in particular was extremely loud, making a resonating slapping noise. Slightly settling the angle against the glass fixed this permanently.

I bought this for my yellow slider turtles' tank (two full grown turtles). The turtles haven't destroyed it yet (thank goodness). I finally decided to swap to a filter that hangs on the tank (best choice so the turtles can't disassemble it). After a week, there's not a lot of waterflow even after changing the filter cartridges but it's still keeping the water clean so I see that as a win. This filter would work amazingly in a regular fish tank as I have a smaller one in my regular fish tank. Turtles are just hard on filters.

I've owned Marineland filters for over 40 years. They are the best ones made. I have 2 old Emperor 400's that are over 20 years old. This is my first of the newer pro series. I am impressed. It does an excellent job filtering my water and I have to look in the tank to tell it's running. It's absolutely silent. Think I'll update some of my old filters to these new pro series filters.
