How do we know if we need fine, medium or coarse?

The size of the comb depends on the coat type. A shorter haired dog like a Boxer or Lab would require Medium, a dog such as a Golden Retriever or longer haired dogs would require Coarse, and small breed dogs such as Chihuahuas or Miniature Schnauzers would require Fine.

Would the small one work for trimming around dogs eyes?

Master Grooming Tools Dog Stripping Knife is not suitable for use around the eyes. It is ideal for plucking and removing excess undercoat.

Photo doesn't do it justice.

I hesitated to buy this because the photo looks to me like the handle is plastic. It's all metal and well balanced. I also wasn't sure I could use it correctly,

I hesitated to buy this because the photo looks to me like the handle is plastic. It's all metal and well balanced. I also wasn't sure I could use it correctly, as 'stripping' seems to be a thing that requires some skill, but I've found simply combing my doggo gently along the direction of her fur, with the blade perpendicular to her body, works just fine. My very shaggy doggo looks much more put together now.

too sharp!

Way too sharp to use for my Norwich Terriers. Might try to dull the sharp points down to be able to use it. I hate to return anything to Chewy!
