Made our pond water brown, cloudy, and smelly

I measured out the straw pellets according to our pond size and left them in our pond (at the top, in the waterfall area) for several weeks. Goal was to try and

I measured out the straw pellets according to our pond size and left them in our pond (at the top, in the waterfall area) for several weeks. Goal was to try and tame string algae after our spring cleanup. However, the pellets made our pond water very brown, so cloudy we couldn't see the fish, and the water smelled really bad. I left the pellets for several weeks thinking it's just due to the pellet breakdown and after some acclimation time perhaps it would improve. It didn't and once I took the pellets out, the water became clear and stopped smelling. And we had new string algae growing. So, the pellets didn't work for us.
