Do some of the whole dry pine pellets fall through the slats in the top bin? Are the slats so big that clean dry pellets fall through at times (in addition to "used" sawdust remnants)? Looking for a box that only the sawdust falls through and not clean unused pellets too.

Answer by JackJul 10, 2025
The holes are big enough that most pellets won't fall through, but all pellet litter has some pellets that have broken small enough to get stuck in the holes. You will have to stir the pellets a little to help the sawdust fall through to the bottom, and you can use the corner of your scoop to easily poke any stuck pieces through to the bottom. I get that this isn't what you're hoping for, but what you say you want does not exist, and this is close. Until there are better pellet litters with only larger pieces, this is the best solution.

Can this be used for rabbits?

Answer by ChewyJan 07, 2026
Yes, the Mr. Catman Sifting Cat Litter Box with Sifter Pan & 7-Day Waste Storage Tray, Large can be used for rabbits, particularly as a litter solution in their enclosures. Many customers have used sifting litter boxes for small pets like rabbits because the sifter helps separate waste from clean bedding or litter (such as pine pellets), making daily spot-cleaning easier. That said, it's important to monitor how their rabbit interacts with the box and ensure the sifter tray design is comfortable for their pet’s feet. Some owners may choose to place a layer of bedding over the sifter or line it with a mat for added comfort.

This is a great sifting litter box. It fits the standard pine pellets perfectly. We are primarily using this for our newest kitten, and plan to get another to transition our older cat. What I like: - Plastic. I know metal may be more sanitary/require less deep cleanings, but we prefer plastic to avoid claws scraping against metal (which doesn't sound great for kitties or humans) - Easy to set up and use. Three pieces, stack them up - boom. Sifting is simple and daily scooping is easy. - High sides to prevent tracking/litter spilling. Helps keep the floor cleaner. - Nice and roomy. Plenty of space for our kitten to dig and get himself arranged. What I don't like: - The price. $60 (on sale) for a litter box you have to scoop yourself is steep. - For older cats, the height. We are going to have to come up with a step design for our older, less mobile cat so she can get in/out easily. Overall an excellent sifting litter box option.

This is what I needed! My elderly cat takes medication that causes excessive urination. I couldn't keep up with scooping clay litter, but this tray and switch to pine pellets has us both happier! Its easy to use, the extra bottom tray makes cleaning more concise, and its well thought out with enough drop basin storage to last a week (with my over producing kitty!) It's one downfall for me is that it's plastic instead of steel, but that's not a reason to pass this one by. The extra storage depth for waste is worth it.

I ordered this litterbox to switch my cat onto the pine pellet litter. This box is a breeze. It’s tall enough that my cat doesn’t kick the litter out. The sifter section collects the sawdust (created by urine) and I don’t have to empty it more than once every two weeks for my single cat. The bottom piece is perfect for setting down the top piece when I’m cleaning out the center sawdust collector. The pellets are big enough to stay on the top portion. This is such an efficient system, I expect to use this for many years. I hated clay litter and the constant cleanup and odor.

I bought 2 xxl. I have 5 cats and needed larger litter pans as the blind ones want to visit when the others go. The tray fills up with sawdust within 7 days. I scoop multiple times a day and it's quick and easy. There is far less sawdust tracking and the pellet life is extended. The problem is with clean-up. The bags provided are flimsy and the pellets get stuck in the holes. I've overcome the bag situation with 18 gallon trash compacter bags and some careful placement in the catch tray. Moving the litter box from the catch tray for emptying or cleaning causes a sawdust mess. I've ended up taking the whole setup outside which is tricky because they are big (and 5 indoor only cats want to go with). After emptying everything, I soak the litter box in the flat tray because it covers the entirety of the bottom of the litter box and leave it there for the pellets to absorb the water. After that I wash and sanitize. This makes a mess in my yard. I don't know how I'll get around this in the cold weather. Despite all that, I do like these pans. There has got to be a better way! If anyone else has any trapped pellet cleaning tips, please share.

This is almost the perfect litter box, the trouble is my cat is a high pee-er and the sides are too low. I noticed a lot of pellets outside the box too, which probably could be solved with higher sides. I ended up returning. I know this company has a larger box available, but it's just barely too wide (by an 1!) to fit in the space I need. I will say, the sifting system with built-in space below is excellent, so much easier than having to use a scoop and try to sift out whole pine pellets and then scooping out the loose pine dust. I was able to store about 7 days worth of pine dust for my single adult male cat before I noticed the over-spray problem.

Easy to clean

It’s a nice size and is very easy to clean. I like how it catches all the pee dust in a bag underneath so I can easily get rid of it.

Almost perfect

I love so many things about this. Just wish the holes were just a tiny bit smaller. The pellets I use can sometimes get stuck/slip through before being “used.” Really

I use pine pellets for litter, and this litterbox is great for the amount of space under the top layer for sifting. My other litterbox has very little space between the two layers that I have to pick up the top layer and shake it to sift out the broken-down pellets, and it's quite a hassle. I now have two cats and plan to buy this again to replace that one.

So useful for a pine pellet user

This is so much more effective as someone who uses pine pellet litter. Shaking the tray once a day is such an easy task to do and it effectively reduces the ammonia smell of the litter. I'd been using a standard litter box w/ pine pellets for awhile prior to this because I didn't know sifting litter boxes existed. Game changer!
