My chickens coouldnt get the food
I had a plastic bucket set up for my chickens and the food would get wet when it rained. I looked for a better quality that had the option of the feed being closed
I had a plastic bucket set up for my chickens and the food would get wet when it rained. I looked for a better quality that had the option of the feed being closed so water doesnt get in. After setting this feeder up, I realized that the food was really far down. I tried ahaking it down and that didnt work.. so i had to take some food, undo the spring that keeps it closed, and add food from the front. Even after doing that, and spilling food in front of the strep and on the step, the chickens would eat the food that was available om the steps, and spilled food, and pecked at the food at the top but where unable to get the food down inside. After a week of trial i desided to return this feeder because they started eating their eggs because they where not able to get their feed from this feeder. I also was not able to get all of their food out of this feeder when trying to clear it out for the return(unless i was willing to vacuum it out :-/ )) and at the top where you put the feed into, that hinged door kept coming off of the rod so that was frustrating..
Not great
I bought this because it looked like a more affordable version of “grandpas feeder” but my chickens refuse to use it. Even with a brick on the step to hold it open
I bought this because it looked like a more affordable version of “grandpas feeder” but my chickens refuse to use it. Even with a brick on the step to hold it open they are too fearful. I realize it’s because the opening is too narrow and they have to stick their head way in there to reach the food. The gravity feeder doesn’t have enough space for the feed to fall through to the bottom so the food gets stuck and the chickens have to reach too far in to get it. (I feed pellets, and they are smaller than “average” sized pellets) I even tried just filling it with treats, scratch and mealworms to teach them how to use it. They will eat if I fill it from the front and it’s high enough, but they wont even eat their favorite treats when they are too far in. I think they’re scared, but they may not even be able to reach it. Even my big, braver girls won’t go for the treats when it gets all the way to the back. I think the opening at the bottom of the gravity feeder is too tight to allow the feed to fall into the feeding tray at a level that is easy and not too scary for them to reach.
