The chick heating plate is effective and simple to use. Chicks quickly found it and self regulated their placement for best temperature. I should have purchased the optional protective cover because three day old chicks hop up and make a big mess on it daily. A removable cover would have facilitated cleaning.

If the chicks are in a heated garage or you are in a warm climate, this will work nicely as a supplemental heat source. But this WILL NOT work if they are in an outdoor building or where the outside temps drop to freezing or below. My wife wanted to switch to this due to fire risks with heat lamps. We have alwaysed used a heat lamp with no issues. I had my doubts but we decided to give it a try. Our chicks did well for the first few days where the temp dropped no lower than 35. But as soon as the temp dropped to freezing, the plate could not keep up. We lost them all. I built a nice set up in a barn out of the elements, if this produced the type of heat it claims to we should not have lost any. Only use this as supplementary heat in warm weather.
