If this opens and closes due to sunlight, if the sun doesn’t come up in the morning, it’s a dark cloudy day, does that mean my chickens won’t be able to go out of the coop? Or does it realize it should be sunny and opens the door?

Open in the morning & close in the evening automatically by setting the timer or using the easily adjusted sunlight sensor.

Is there any safety feature so the chickens don't get squished by the door is the timer goes off as they're walking through?

The closing mechanism works off weight on the line. If the weight goes away, such as when in the closed position or hitting something on the way down, it stops lowering the door until the obstacle moves out of the way.

How often does the batteries need changed? Does it have an icon to show battery life?

Batteries typically last at least 6 months. The door runs on 4 x AA alkaline batteries (included). This features a low battery warning, battery life is shown on the main screen.

Can you program the opener to open at a certain time or does it strictly go off of light?

The door will only open in the morning hours range 12 AM-11:59 AM, and close in afternoon hours range 12:00 – 11:59 PM. If you’d like to test that the door will open and close, simply choose operating mode Light – Light, hold your hand over the sensor to simulate darkness, the door will close.

Disapointed

The Coop Defender was not the same, they changed the rails and they are flimsy and make operting the door difficult

The door is pretty simple and straight forward. All the parts were included and it assembled just fine. I was nervous about the programming as reviews had said

They are not very instructive, that's for sure, but it seems I figure it out mostly. I still haven't figured out which direction the numbers run to indicate lighter or darker, but it seems to be working okay for now.

It gives error codes, and even after we fix the issue (and sometimes it throws a code and there is no issue), the door never works. So I’m back to open and closing my coop manually.
