What is the maximum length of the strap (i.e. the gap it can cover between doorframe and door)?

The full length of the strap (including the latch mechanisms) is approximately 10 inches. The length of only the strap itself is approximately 7.25 inches.

does not work on plastic trash cans

It did not work what we bought it for. The adhesive wouldn't stick to our plastic trash cans. Making them unusable.
