About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

He seemed curious, but after multiple introductions could not seem to get the hang of this level 1 puzzle, and lost interest quickly. When I took off the cylinders to expose the kibble, he didn’t even seem that interested in chewing them. They are a hard plastic that could probably stand up to some abuse, but perhaps they were too slippery? Not his preferred mouth feel?

Our dog took a couple of tries before he picked up this game. Now he likes the Level 2 toy even more, because of the challenge, I think. Our cat has learned to nab a treat if the dog is too slow. Highly recommend, wish I had purchased sooner. Sturdy construction (our dog is not destructive though).

Unfortunately, it seems Paloma is too small to grab the items, or they have too little grip for her. It seems to frustrate her despite being a lvl 1 puzzle. Maybe if they were gripper she would find it a more worthwhile puzzle? At the moment she slams into it until the pieces go everywhere.

Easy for beginners

Very easy for dogs who need confidence. I would have given5 stars if the material of the "cups" were a little different so that they were easier for the dog to bite

My cats love puzzles and this was an instant favorite. Since they can’t pick up the covers with their mouths like a dog could, it’s more difficult to open. I placed small stickers at the bottom of each treat hiding spot to raise it up, making it easier for the covers to come out when they hit it with their paws.

Great entertainment

Bought this for my dog to give him some challenges since we can’t get out for daily walks during winter. He LOVES it. He huffs at me when I’m putting treats in it

Ive been using this for treat puzzles with my cat, he obviously has to use his teeth to pick these up ( in assuming small dogs would have to as well ), he enjoys the process but I just checked a few of the cylinders and it turns out they're made from a material that is starting to break apart. Not great considering these are meant to be used with food, hopefully he didn't ingest too much material. Gonna keep an eye on how the other pieces fare but not happy honestly!
