Feeding Instructions

Just like you, your cat is a unique individual so feeding amounts will vary. Use this chart as an initial guide, monitor your cat's weight and adjust portions accordingly. Feed twice daily and always provide fresh, clean water.

Weight Lean Adult Daily Feeding (Cups) Overweight Adult Daily Feeding (Cups) Senior Daily Feeding (Cups)
4 1/2 lbs 1/4 1/4
6 1/2 lbs 1/3 1/4
9 lbs 1/2 1/3
11 lbs 1/2 1/2 1/2
13 lbs 2/3 1/2 1/2
18 lbs 3/4 2/3 2/3
22 lbs 7/8 2/3 2/3

Kittens: Post weaning (~5 weeks old) feed 1/2 cup per 2.2 lbs of body weight. At 20 weeks(~5 months) feed 1/4 cup per 2.2 lbs of body weight. Start adult feeding guide by 52 weeks old. Gestation: Increase daily feeding amount by 25%. Lactation: Free feed.

Transition Instructions

Cats are often fed the same food, which means a sudden food change makes it difficult for their digestive systems to adapt, which is why it’s important to introduce the new food gradually. Going slowly will give your cat time to adjust to their new food and will also reduce the chances of digestive upset.

Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% old food. Slowly change the proportions over the next 5 - 7 days by gradually increasing the amount of ORIJEN and decreasing the amount of old food. At the end of this transitioning process, you should be feeding 100% ORIJEN.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Biologically Appropriate™ concept is Simple: mirror the freshness and variety of meats that dogs and cats are evolved to eat.

Nature matched the nutrients in whole prey animals to perfectly meet your dog or cat’s needs. ORIJEN WholePrey represents the evolution of ORIJEN foods, incorporating meats, organs and cartilage in ratios that mirror the natural diet, and eliminate the need for long lists of synthetic ingredients.

Biologically Appropriate foods are formulated to match the eating anatomy of the animal they are intended for. As dogs and cats are evolved as carnivores, that means they require high concentrations of meat, high inclusions of fresh meat, and a rich diversity of meat. Is your food Biologically Appropriate™? Answer the 3 meat questions: * HOW MUCH MEAT IS IN THE TOTAL DIET? * HOW MUCH FRESH MEAT? * HOW MANODS CONTAIN BOTANICALS?**

ORIJEN is designed to match the natural diet as closely as is possible in a kibble format. Botanicals are a part of the natural diet for all cats and dogs, and play an important role in bridging the gap between good health and peak conditioning. The botanicals found in ORIJEN are selected by one of North America’s leading Homeopathic Veterinarians.

While there are many differences between ACANA and ORIJEN, both diets reflect our belief in the importance of providing diets that are Biologically Appropriate™, using ingredients that are Fresh, Regional, and Never Outsourcing any part of the cooking or packaging of our Brands.

When comparing the 2 brands, let’s ask the 3 Meat Questions: 1. How Much Meat? ORIJEN has 85-90% Meat, while ACANA foods have 50-75%. 2. How Fresh? ORIJEN’s foods have 2/3 Fresh meats and ACANA’s have ½ fresh. 3. How Many Meats? ORIJEN foods have up to 10 meats, while ACANA’s foods feature up to 5.

Put simply, ORIJEN and ACANA foods mimic the natural eating habits of your cat or dog with high fresh meat inclusions and low inclusion of carbohydrates. Although slightly lower in protein than ORIJEN, ACANA provides an unbeatable value and price point that makes Biologically Appropriate™ pet foods accessible to a wide range of pet lovers.

Organ meats are a concentrated and natural source of virtually every nutrient your dog needs to thrive, including all essential vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and vital amino acids.

Densely packed with nearly every nutrient, including heavy doses of B vitamins, organ meats such as kidney, liver and tripe are loaded with the minerals phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium and iodine, and provide important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, all of which nourish dogs and cats as nature intended.

Which is why you will find amino acids, including taurine or minerals like calcium and phosphorus on the guaranteed analysis but not on the ingredient list!

ORIJEN’s fresh meat inclusions are very high. The 2 largest nutritional components of fresh meat are protein and fat. By using large inclusions of fresh meat we are able to minimize the amount of added fat in our ingredient list.

  • picky cat approves!

I bought this in hope to help my kibble-loving cat to get rid of hairball problem & get the wet-food-only cat to start eating some kibbles again instead of waking me up at 3am to open a can of wet food for her. I opened the bag and poured some into their bowls, both of them immediately start to gobble down! They didn't stop until they finish their entire bowls! Needless to say I will definitely purchase it again b/c my cat hasn't touch dry food (unless necessary) for a long time and it's a first for her to be so drawn to kibbles! I will observe the other cat to see if hairball problems improve.

  • Great Price & Product

I read about how great this food was online but it's so expensive in my local stores. Thank you Chewy.com for the great prices. The product is amazing too, within 2 weeks of putting this in the dinner bowl, even the vet noticed the bright shine my black cats coat took on from the food.

  • Excellent product

Pay for healthy food or pay the vet but this is just so expensive not sure can afford. Trying to heal a sick feral kitty to give her a chance at life. If lives, will have to feed something I can afford. Not sure but seems to be the best on the market.

  • Red food for alot of green

    By on

This food is great. I love the ingredients and feel good about feeding it to my kitty. I added it to his current kibble, which he ate around, and goobled only the Orijen. I knocked off one star for the steep price - 6 times his regular dry food - and because this dry food is not very firm so there is a considerable amount of crumble which I doubt he'll eat. I may purchase again as a treat but it won't be my kitty's dry food staple.

I wanted to feed my elderly rescue kitty a high quality species appropriate diet but had hard time getting him to eat anything healthy. This food did the trick. Got his appetite kick started and is gaining weight.

  • Worried if my cats would like it

    By on

My cats have been on Orijen original and six fish for the last six months. I was concerned that they wouldn't like the red proteins, after reading many reviews stating that cats just did not take to it well. Both of my girls absolutely LOVE the red recipe! I could not be happier

Our cat goes nuts over her food. It's expensive but a little bit goes a long way. Our girl also never had a hairball, zero vomiting ever, and looks strong and healthy!

  • Cats won't eat

    By on

I have 2 cats. One is overweight the other throws up all the time. When I read positive reviews I was quite excited thinking that maybe I have finally found a grain free food my cats would like. The negative reviews were mostly cats that had been on original formula and refused the new. So I thought since mine had never tried it they would be fine. My overweight cat tried it but when my other cat refused to eat it she then refused. I mixed it with the other food but alas they left this kibble in the bowl. I had a coupon for a first time buy so I at least did not incur such an expense. Guess I will feed it to the crows and blue jays. Quite disappointed.

  • Another winner

This seems to have very good ingredients for cat food. My cat loves it, but he loves every dry cat food I've fed him so far (6 total). For unknown reasons he doesn't like any canned cat food, and I've served him the best.

  • Very good food, but pricy

    By on

This is going to be my new go-to dry food. I hate that I even use dry foods for my cats, but if I do I want to make sure I am feeding them the best. Lots of grain free dry foods are high in carbs which will turn to sugar and could lead to diabetes. It is the most expensive dry brand I have found, but I do think the quality is there, and it has the lowest carbs I have seen in a dry too.
