Once completed, the shelf is functional and sturdy. But, the instructions are 20 pages long, and include 21 different pieces and 20 different solid parts. I am an ikea/build it yourself furniture pro, and this build took me a solid 2.5 hours with a short snack break because it was getting so late. And of course it is packaged in such a way where if one of the prefabricated parts is incorrect, you would never get it back in the box for a return. All my parts were there and in decent condition, but I could see it going poorly if a part were missing or wrong. Take your chances! The water/food dishes are deep, and if you have a sloppy drinker like I do, you will be wiping the water from the drawer constantly. But the finish seems fairly water resistant, so far no problems.
