What does self-starting mean? How does it work?
Answer by • Feb 24, 2025
The term “Self-starting” means that you do not have to prime the filter. Once the filter is put into place, covered with gravel and the air pump is turned on the filter will start working immediately. The bubbles in the uplift tube will start pulling water down through the gravel to begin filtering. The water will then cycle up the uplift tubes, so the final filtration step is the carbon cartridges on the top. With the bubbles in the tube it may seem like water is moving, but it is. There should be one uplift tube on each plate of the filter. There are 2 options to choose from on each plate.
