how does this work?
Answer by ChewyNov 24, 2021
This gravel cleaner uses a siphon to clean the gravel. There are several different attachments that come with the cleaner. If the attachments do not fit, the extension tube has been pushed inside of another tube and will need to be pulled down for the attachments. There is a waterline on the main body of the cleaner. This line is between 2 holes. The bottom hole will need to be submerged in water while the upper one will need to be exposed. If both holes are submerged, or if the upper hole is cover by a hand the cleaner will not pull water.

What batteries does this use?
Answer by ChewyFeb 06, 2023
The cleaner uses 2 “C” batteries and they are installed into the top handle.

Useful

I use the cleaner to remove the dirt inevitably covering aquarium plants with time (fish poop, micronutrients precipitates, etc.). People complain that the Cleaner does not help because the suction is too weak, but is actually does! Stronger suction would damage the plants. You need to slightly agitate the water above the plant right below the input of the cleaner and the dirt will go in without damaging the plant. The process is slow, but it works well once you get adjusted to it. Four (not five) stars because the cleaner is a bit cumbersome to use, it could have been better designed to fit in the tank. You need to to learn to move it around "just right for you" to use it effectively.

Good vacuum

I’m so glad I found this vacuum at Chewy. I had been looking for a while to replace the one I had that broke after many years. It works great! The only thing I’d comment on is I wish the tube was more clear. I like to see the debris going up the tube. It’s very satisfying!

AQUARIUM AIDE

WHILE I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE PRODUCT, I AM EXTREMELY PLEASED BY THE SERVICE I RECEIVED WHEN I CONTACTED CHEWY ABOUT MY PROBLEM. I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO PURCHASE FROM CHEWY IN THE FUTURE.

This is great!

It's as satisfying as a Biore strip to watch everything get sucked up. It doesn't remove it from the tank, just filters it through a little sock that you rinse out afterwards. It doesn't clean perfectly, there's still more waste when I siphon out the water for a water change, but it sure helps a lot.

Penn-Plax Gravel cleaner

I've been using this cleaner for over 15 years. Does a good job with a small modification. Removed filter bag and replaced with 1/2" plastic tubing attached to a HOB filter and placed inside HOB filter. With the supplied filter bag tank gets cloudy and you can't see where your cleaning because dirty water goes back into tank. HOB filter is replaced after cleaning.

Long enough for my 75 gal. tank.

I already had one of these but had to modify it to use in my 75 gal tank. The Penn Plax has a longer extension and works better. Be careful it will vacuum sand. If you are careful you can avoid the sand and just pick up the waste. It’s got the power to do the job. I like it.
