What is the accuracy of this thermometer when used on a dog? e.g., what is the variation? Accuracy is + or - how many degrees off?

Answer by ChewyNov 08, 2019
Accuracy is tested by using a device with a known temperature. The manufacturer uses a reference body that allows them to calibrate within ASTM standards of plus or minus 0.2 degree Celsius. It will read the ear temperature of plus or minus 0.2 degree Celsius (or 0.3 degree Fahrenheit). The thermometer tip must be pointed at the horizontal canal in the dog or cats ear. The horizontal canal is the heat pocket that needs to be measured. This is accomplished by pulling the outside ear and pushing the tip so it’s snug in the ear while pointing towards the opposite jaw. If the tip is just put slightly into the ear, the temperature will read low because the vertical canal is cooled by ambient air.

How do I change the battery?

Answer by ChewyJul 23, 2022
Due to the fact that the Vet-Temp will need recalibration after the battery is changed, the VetTemp must be returned to Advanced Monitors Corporation for a new battery. The life span of the battery is over 20,000 temperatures, with a shelf life of up to 10 years. If the Vet-Temp were used 20 times a day, 6 days per week, the battery would last approximately 4 years. Although, more extensive thermometer usage may somewhat shorten the life of the battery

This was actually purchased pre-Chewy from a local vendor Dr. Fosters and Smith that has subsequently become part of Chewy. We originally got it along with about 80 covers to check our Maine Coon cart’s temperature. That was 1991. Our cat lived to a pleasant old age of 16. Recently our miniature poodle Brewster who is 16 in 2 weeks has had a series of bladder infections. The vet wanted to track his temperature and we were going to buy one again. I took a chance looking in our pet supplies and found this. The battery still shows 100% full and it works perfectly-we compared his temperature in the office before relying on this due to its age. It’s an absolute breeze to use and in a few seconds we know how the little guy is doing fever wise. Highly recommended to many others over the years even though we didn’t need it much. Best $60 we’ve spent on pet supplies in a long time. It’s served well over 5 cats and 6 dogs.

Very finicky, difficult to get reading.

Im a vet tech and I use the ear ones in clinic from a different brand. I wanted one at home for convenience. Not only do my dogs hate it, I have extreme difficulty getting it to read their temperature. It does better with cats, but any ear hair, wax, and your angle will dramatically affect your reading. Do not recommend.

This works really well, but it's faster read than I expected, so took some adjustment. I also struggled a bit getting the fresh plastic (saran wrap-like) cover onto the lens end, but once I knew how much force it took to stretch it on, it all went well. AND I'm happy that our cat is feeling much better; the temperature tells us what's going on. (Much better to use the ear than the other end of the cat! ;)

This was expensive and didnt work at all. I used it on my other three cats to test and get familiar with using it. 98.3 temp for all cats, every time. This would be a concering temp for a cat and there is no way they are all exactly the same. Doesn't work and an exorbitant price. I didnt even bother with the cat I was concerned to have a fever. Just taking her to vet to get it done the old fashioned way,

Works well

I got this to monitor my cat's temperature. He is quite feisty and it's hard to take his temp. This works in like 2 seconds so he doesn't even realize it's there!

This worked well for a few months then it became so unreliable. I get very low and extremely different readings just seconds apart now. It was a lifesaver while it did work as I cannot get a rectal reading on my wiggly cat for the life of me. Her ears were warm one day along with other symptoms and I easily checked her temperature with this thermometer and found that she had a fever. Was able to get her into the vet before she got worse. Easy to use product. Just wish it lasted longer. Had it less than a year.
