Is PetSafe® ScoopFree® Premium Crystal Litter Safe? The short answer is "yes." The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers our Crystal Litter safe for humans and animals. Pregnant women, babies, small children and immune-deficient individuals should avoid contact with cat litter waste. Cat’s waste may contain toxoplasmosis bacteria that can be harmful to these individuals. What is the PetSafe® ScoopFree® Premium Crystal Litter Made From? Our litter is an amorphous silica gel. Amorphous Silica is an organic product. It is non-toxic and perfectly safe for human and animal use. The automatic litter box requires the ScoopFree Premium Non Clumping Litter. The box uses a special crystal litter, packed in a convenient disposable litter tray, that is 5 times more effective at reducing odor than clay or clumping litters.

If it’s non clumping, the urine wouldn’t be scooped away. How does it not smell if it just stays in the box?

You should change the litter tray when the crystal litter is saturated or when the waste trap is full. As the crystals absorb urine, the litter will start to turn yellow. Once the majority of the litter turns yellow, the crystals are nearing their saturation point. When the crystals can no longer absorb any more moisture, you may start to notice an odor from the urine. When the waste trap is full, the waste trap cover will not close completely. You may see small pieces of solid waste sticking out from underneath the lid. You may also start to notice an odor from the solid waste.

can this litter be used under very high humidity conditions? (on a screened in porch).

This litter cannot be used in a humid area. The crystal litter controls odor by absorbing moisture from cats’ waste. If the litter box is in a humid area, it will absorb moisture from the air and exhaust the litter before it is substantially used. The litter box must be used indoors in a climate-controlled, well-ventilated, weatherproof area.

I have 3 cats and 3 jump-in cat boxes with the expensive litter that changes color based on ph levels and other factors. We bought this because my wife wanted an automatic box. First of all, it seems to do a good job of odor control. My cats seem to have taken to it well. Maybe too well. I may end up having to buy one for each cat. Also I am concerned that with the high amount of use I will run out of crystals or storage and need to change boxes sooner. However, it does make quite the mess. So I am returning this one and ordering the one with the jump in cover. It is a little silly that piece can not be ordered separately after you realize how much you need it.

we have had this new litter box for about 10 days now. We spent the first 3-4 days with it next to the old litter box. Our cat would get into the new box and feel

we have had this new litter box for about 10 days now. We spent the first 3-4 days with it next to the old litter box. Our cat would get into the new box and feel around but untimately jump into the old box to do his business. By day four, the old litter box was pretty much used up so we removed it and watched him carefully for the next few days...he wasn't happy and was looking for his old box but as soon as he used the new box, I was waiting with treats and praise...continued this for the next few days. It does say the crystal should last longer than they did but I expected that going into this because he is an older cat and uses the box quite a bit. What I found is the crystals started to track yesterday....so I investigated and when I compared fresh crystals to used, I could see it was time to change...so for our older cat, it seems we will change once a week. Changing it over was so easy, just lift the top, pull out the old tray and put down the new.....so much nicer than scooping mulitple times a day!

Misses the Mark

The concept is great and I thought it would help when I had to be away overnight.... But, it missed raking up kitty poop that was beyond the area the rake covers

The concept is great and I thought it would help when I had to be away overnight.... But, it missed raking up kitty poop that was beyond the area the rake covers. Outside of that, it does work well sensing when the weight of a cat has been "visiting" and it's a nice size.
