is this suitable for large breed puppies? What is the % of calcium and phosphorus?

This recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages including growth of large size dogs (70 pounds or more as an adult). This variety contains approximately 1.22% Calcium content on an as fed basis (1.29% on a dry matter basis) and 1.05% Phosphorus content on an as fed basis (1.11% on a dry matter basis).

What is the shelf life of this food? Would vacuum sealing it extend the shelf life?

Since Primal Pet Foods specializes in fresh, raw, meat products, which are sensitive to handling and temperature, they do set conservative expiration windows. This means that the product is usually good up to, and often, even past its expiration date. However, they prefer to err on the side of caution and do not recommend feeding any Primal Pet Foods product after the printed “best by” date on the package. To ensure the best results, please note that light and air are the biggest factors in keeping the food fresh so keeping it in the opaque bag and sealed with minimal air inside will help it last as long as possible. They have not tested for the product's integrity regarding the vacuum seal.

Last Bag Too Hard For My Purposes

I've bought this several times and use it for training treats because it's always been small, soft morsels. This last bag the food is HARD and doesn't even break down all that well when I soak it. Disappointing. Also I did not buy a bundle of 2, 25 oz bags, I bought ONE 25 oz bag. Pretty expensive to use for treats, not buying to feed as a meal which I will probably have to do now that it's too hard for a training treat.

I use primal frozen with my older dog and thought this might be a good way to transition my puppy over to raw and maybe cheaper. Boy was I wrong. While the quality is good and I love that it is shelf stable, the bag is so small and price was huge! Double what I pay for a frozen bag. With the frozen at my local pet store there is a reward program too with every 12th bag. I think I may just transition him over to that and save myself money with both dogs on the same thing. If your looking for shelf stable this might be the option for you, but I found it very expensive.

I’ve spent oodles of money trying to find a food my finicky ShihTzu likes. This one was another fail for me. It failed to entice my 2 Shepherds as well. I was a little hopeful until I hydrated it. They took the pieces but immediately spit them out. It’s very spongy when hydrated. You can literally squeeze the liquid back out. I think the texture is probably not appealing to some dogs. Sad to say it definitely was not to mine.

We have a puppy Yorkie that the breeder starts and recommends on raw dog food. We use this over non-freeze-dried raw for convenience and to have on the shelf (over in a freezer and frig). I pre-smash the pieces slightly/gently (using a hammer, between paper plates) and add the Primal goat milk (heated for just a few seconds in the microwave) as the hydrator. He loves it. And we love it with him getting such a healthy and nutritious meal.
