How much Mercury is in this food?

The FDA does have an advisory regarding human consumption of some predatory fish species having higher levels of methyl mercury; however, the fish used in Purina products are not listed in this category. As part of their comprehensive food safety and ingredient surveillance programs, we do test for well over 150 substances — including mercury. At Purina, all seafood vendors must go through an extensive Vendor Approval Process including on-site audits and repeated ingredient testing for mercury and other contaminants, with preference given to geographical areas and fish species known to have low mercury residues. Only those vendors that pass this review process are approved vendors of Purina. Nearly all fish and shellfish contain traces of mercury. Because mercury is a naturally occurring substance in many fish, it is possible that trace amounts – measured in parts per billion – might be detected in any product with seafood. These unavoidable traces do not pose a risk to a pet’s health.

The Tuna in this recipe is sourced from US, Mexico or Ecuador and the Mackerel is sourced from US or Mexico. The vast majority of ingredients used in Purina products made in the U.S. are sourced here in the U.S. Like other food companies, we do source a limited amount of ingredients from other countries. These ingredients are primarily essential nutrients, such as taurine and B vitamins that are not commonly available in the U.S. in the quantities we need.
