The Purina Layena 16% Protein Crumbles come in a thick, waterproof zip lock bag that makes storage super easy. When I opened it I was pleasantly surprised about the texture. It isn't dusty and the crumbles have a nice size so the chicken don't waste a lot of food. I like that it comes in this handy 10 lbs bag. Nice for people with small flocks to ensure the food is always fresh or for people that can't lift the heavy 50 lbs bags. The food has a rich dark yellow color that probably comes from the Marigold which also helps the chicken produce dark yellow yolks. Looking at the ingredient list I notice added oyster shells, Vitamin D and added minerals like manganese which helps make sure calcium is always available and not pulled from the bones. Next to these they also added probiotics for gut health from natural sources. Unfortunately Corn and Soybean meal are high on the ingredient list and the food is not organic. Since I knew this when I ordered I'm all right with it. Most importantly my chicken love it. They came running as soon as I filled their feeder. Our rooster did his cute little calling sounds and made sure everyone had a chance to enjoy the new food. I can recommend this food if you want good quality and don't want to go all out and pay premium on organic feed.

Good quality brand of feed

I always feed Purina feed to my chickens. I have never had any issues with it. I typically use a pelleted feed in their automatic feeders. After using this bag

I always feed Purina feed to my chickens. I have never had any issues with it. I typically use a pelleted feed in their automatic feeders. After using this bag of crumb feed I will still stick with the pellets. I find that I get a lot less waste when using pelleted feed as opposed to crumbles. This could very well just be the type of gravity feeder I use and my birds themselves.

I’ve been looking for a healthy chicken feed that my -new to me- hens will eat and this one is it. They’ve been extremely picky about everything and up until now have rejected nearly all the brands and styles i’ve tried, preferring to be frantically hungry rather than eat. But the first time they saw this feed in their dish it was a different story, after a quick inspection they dug right in. Even my elderly drake wanted to try it!

So far my little flock of 4 really love this feed! I usually give them a basic layer crumble from the feed store, but they have a tendency to pick through it and leave a mess on the ground. Not the case with this feed! I've only been feeding this to them for about a week so I can't really tell you how it will effect their eggs yet. But I'm so happy I'm getting less waste and have some happy ladies!

This is a good feed for my hens. They seem to enjoy it and it contains 16% protein which helps them lay nutritious eggs. I have found that it leads to better egg production too. The feed also contains prebiotics and probiotics that boosts their immune system and promotes good gut health. It is easier for my smaller hens to eat because the crumbles are small.

I’ve tried several different brands and styles of chicken feed and keep coming back to this one. Sometimes it gets mixed with whole grains, but the flock loves it

I’ve tried several different brands and styles of chicken feed and keep coming back to this one. Sometimes it gets mixed with whole grains, but the flock loves it either way. Having minerals added is great - I still supplement with oyster shells separately but worry less if it runs out. My flock definitely likes the crumble texture better than others we’ve tried.
