We recommend that you keep your dog in ideal body condition and not allow your dog to become overweight. The exact amount of food your dog requires will need to be adjusted according to age, activity and environment. But a good place to start is with these guidelines for an average, active, adult dog fed once daily. Provide adequate fresh water in a clean container daily. For your pet's health, see your veterinarian regularly.
Transition Instructions
Although you'll be anxious to see the difference Pro Plan can make in your dog, please allow 7 - 10 days to ease the transition from your dog's current food. Each day, simply feed a little less of the previous food and a little more Pro Plan until you're feeding Pro Plan exclusively. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets.

What is the difference between this and the non large breed version besides the kibble?
Answer by Tammy • Jan 04, 2026
Per the Purina website, large breed guaranteed analysis has 12% fat vs 16% fat non large breed. Large breed also has fewer calories in the same weight of food, making it more filling, very important for my Labrador. There are other small differences, you can see it at purina.com. Go to the each product, tap ‘ingredient drop down’, tap ‘download full ingredient pdf’. It will open in a new window.
is this poultry free
Answer by • Feb 10, 2023
This recipe does not use chicken or poultry within the ingredients.
Does this smell like fish?
Answer by • Oct 12, 2020
Dogs are attracted to their food by the way it tastes, smells and feels in their mouths. Pro Plan foods are made with highly palatable ingredients that are enjoyed by dogs, but might not necessarily be enjoyed by their human caretakers.

I’m still not sure what to think about this kibble. My 7 1/2 year old GSD was weaned and raised on Raw Food. For various reasons we had to switch it over to home made boiled or cooked meats and vegetables, beef green tripe and added supplements a few years ago. He’s a high drive working dog but tends to be yeasty with certain grains or carbs and he’s sensitive to high fats (causes diarrhea). . It’s very hard to keep weight on a dog who can’t have fats or carbs particularly when he’s high energy. He’s always been incredibly healthy but I wanted to add a little kibble to help him gain weight and perhaps add something he might be missing (since his meals are home made). I was looking for skin and digestive health with limited ingredients. So far, other than softer poop it seems to be working out very well. Note that he gets fed 3 times a day. Morning and evening meals are large and I add 20 pieces of kibble (that’s it). Midday is a smaller basic meal without supplements and about 5-7 pieces of kibble. The kibble definitely softens his poop so I hesitate to give him more than I do - it’s been about a month now. The best part is the yeasty smell is pretty much gone. Dogs periodically shake their heads, they periodically scratch or lick which is generally their normal grooming behavior. Is there a difference with this food? It seems to be less but he’s obsessive at times when it comes to licking his paws, but if he’s distracted or given alternatives he calms so it’s difficult to tell. This is the 3rd kibble I’ve been experimenting with and there’s definitely a positive difference in skin yeastiness and he’s putting on healthy weight. I’m sticking to this for awhile.

Haven't noticed much change in her skin issues and she's been on it for a year now. Have a little disappointed lately with the quality. Seems very dry and have been getting a full cup of food dust in the bottom of storage container and some each time we scoop out her feedings. I know some is normal but the last 4-5 bags have been really bad. Not super happy especially with how much we pay.

I had to get this bag of food instead of my regular bc my regular Inukshuk was out of stock. This Purina dog food is so dry that when I opened the bag it’s mostly food dust. Disgusting and can’t be very nutritional for my dog. For $100 I expected a lot better. Very disappointed.

I bought this by accident. I thought I'd given my dog Salmon-flavored before but too late my kids reminded me it was Lamb-flavored. Still, I thought I'd give it a shot anyway and mix it in with her food. At first she ate it, but within a bowl or two, she was walking away from all her food. Because I was mixing it with her regular dry beef flavored, I decided to put out just the salmon-flavored food, and she went the entire day without eating. I dumped the food and gave her back her beef which she then ate reluctantly. I wasted $77 because this was the smallest bag available to buy, and I ended up giving the food away. I'm so discouraged. This is NOT Chewy's fault. This is solely my fault for getting the wrong food. A very hard lesson learned. Fortunately my dog still has her beef flavored food to eat this month.

My 7 year old blue heeler might be allergic to this

He vomited and I’m seeing scabs. He already had some itching so I tried this to see if it was a food issue. This made him itch more I think. scabs all over his face. I tried a small bag of the non Large Breed formula and I think he was okay with that. I should’ve stuck with that formula but figured large breed would be better since he’s over 50 lbs.
