Rifampin can cause red-orange colored urine, tears, sweat, and saliva. There are no harmful consequences from this effect. A retrospective study in dogs found that at dosages ranging from 2.9 16 mg/kg/day, 16% of treated dogs showed adverse effects including vomiting (7%), anorexia (6%), and lethargy (4%).4 Commonly used dosages can cause increased liver enzymes (ALT) in ?25% of treated dogs.4 Hepatitis has been reported in some treated dogs. Some have suggested that daily PO doses not exceed 10 mg/kg in dogs to reduce chances for hepatopathy. If using in cats for mycobacterial infections, signs of liver dysfunction including inappetence, vomiting, or jaundice may occur. Hepatopathy can be fatal.
Rifampin is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to it or other rifamycins. It should be used with caution in patients with preexisting hepatic dysfunction. Dogs may be more susceptible to hepatotoxicity than some other species. Small animals should be closely monitored for signs of hepatopathy.
