Not exactly step in

First of all, this is for my Siamese Cat Loki who has never worn a collar, harness or leash before but has suddenly decided he wants to go outside. We live in a rural area that is not safe so he would have to be on a leash and I figured he'd be less likely to squirm out of a harness than a collar. I've spent weeks getting him used to the harness indoors. Perhaps it's operator error but if we "step in" to the harness the leash hook is under him and it doesn't seem to fit properly. Trying to put it on him the other way is harder than trying to dress a very active toddler armed with butcher knives in a snowsuit! Even when I did get it on him it still just didn't seem right although he did finally get to go outside and walk a little bit!
