Selegiline is an oral prescription medication used to treat cognitive dysfunction and senility in older dogs. It can also be used to treat Cushing's disease when it is caused by a pituitary tumor. Its a generic alternative to Anipryl, and its the only FDA-approved drug for canine senility. It comes in a capsule form, so you can easily hide it in a pill pocket and give it as a tasty treat or disguise it in your pals favorite wet food. Chewy chooses FedEx for delivery, a carrier who is notoriously late. I contacted chewy to cancel/reroute the order back to Chewy so that I could try again with a new shipment, but Chewy was unwilling. I ran out and had to order from my local vet’s online clinic. This medication is not available at any clinic locally, so running out because FedEx is more than a week delayed is very stressful. I will choose another way to get this Rx because FedEx is unreliable and Chewy wasn’t willing to help me out.

I have been told by Chewy to send my hard copy prescription by priority mail to avoid the prescription being lost. (My last mailed prescription was a study in poor process once I mailed it via regular mail.) I sent via priority for my last prescription and prior to mailing the prescription Chewy pharmacy support folks advised I would be reimbursed for the cost of priority mail. I have not yet been reimbursed. Can you advise when I can expect reimbursement?

The 3 star has nothing to do with the amazingly service of chewy or our vets office in getting the prescription. That was great. However the medication just didn’t work out for our 13 YO dachshund boy, Jake, who has canine cognitive dysfunction. Unfortunately it seemed to work at first. Then after about 30 days he started experiencing all of the bad side effects of the medication. His loss of appetite and his anxiety/nightares especially late at night being the worst. Him being in his twilight years we can’t afford for him to lose his appetite. We are almost done weening him off of this medication per our vet’s instructions. It’s been rough and we’ll be exploring other options after he is off of this medication. Maybe this medication will work for another pet, it just didn’t work well for him.

When we found out, Wally had dementia we were very sad. He is 19 years old and we were afraid that nothing could help. Our veterinarian said that selegiline could help. We were very skeptical. After a few weeks, he started to show improvement. We were amazed at how much he was acting like his normal self. I’m very skeptical about trying new medications for our dogs. We have been very blessed to have a veterinarian that has the knowledge about complicated conditions and medication that can help dementia in dogs.
